Today we’d like to introduce you to Maylene Cabral.
Hi Maylene, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up with two cultural backgrounds, I was exposed to different music, art, and entertainment and that’s where a lot of my passion comes from. I was always encouraged to try new things whether that was sports, music, or art. I was constantly surrounded by creativity and because of that, it has made me who I am today.
My passion for makeup came from facing one my biggest insecurities during high school. I had really bad acne and was self-conscious about my skin. I would watch hours and hours of YouTube tutorials and practice different looks all the time, ultimately to try to cover up my scars. This is what ignited my love for the beauty world.
In 2018, I went to Michael Vincent Academy and received my Certification for Makeup Artistry. I learned a lot of techniques and developed a high level of knowledge about the culture of beauty.
Today, I continue to nurture my passion by keeping up with the current landscape of the makeup world – from following the biggest influencers, watching tutorials and keeping a close eye on the latest makeup products.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road for me. Covid 19 was a challenging time and I found myself having these creative blocks. Learning how to push myself even when I wasn’t feeling confident was extremely important.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a Freelance Makeup Artist in Los Angeles. For the last couple of years, I have developed a unique and versatile style, from soft glam to bold, editorial looks. Working an array of experiences in makeup rather than focusing on a specific area in the field, I believe is what makes me unique. I work with a diversity of clients (age, skin color, gender) and for different types of occasions like weddings, music videos, photoshoots, etc. A few of my clients that I’ve worked with are Savage X Fenty, Champion, and The Zeus Network.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
To be honest, I’m not quite sure. It will be somewhere in the creative field for sure but right now, I am focusing on the present and going with the flow.
