Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Sapp.
Hi Scott, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been using a DSLR since my son was 3 or 4. Got tired of the lag of old digital cameras. I had a 70-200mm lens and a canon 7d that I used for his basketball games. While I was researching the lens, I noticed that it was commonly used for portrait work. So I took some photos of my family at 2.8 and zoomed all the way out to 200mm. The results were quite amazing. I started photographing family and friends for a year or so and attended photo meets to practice. After a while, people started asking my rates and so my side hustle began. I now charge for headshots and family shoots. To keep it interesting, I collaborate with designers, stylists and models when time allows. Having a full-time job makes that hard sometimes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Only real issue I’ve come across is people flaking and not respecting my time. Other than that it’s been a lot of fun!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My regular job isn’t very creative. Photography definitely gives me a creative outlet. I’d say I specialize in portrait photography with a hint of fashion/editorial. I try my best to connect with the people I’m shooting with to get them comfortable with having their pictures taken. I’m most proud of the fact that I can keep growing as a photographer and am willing to shoot with people of all backgrounds.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
YouTube should get a lot of credit! Lol. I’m pretty much self-taught. When I started portrait photography Dani Diamond was a huge influence. I bought his course. At the moment Phil Sharp is a big influence. There have been so many friends, family and models that have allowed me to try out different styles. Just know that I appreciate you all.
