Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Holmes.
Hi Roy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career began something after my final playing season at Northern Arizona University where I played football for the Lumberjacks as a defensice back. I started off volunteering for a local high school as a wide receiver and defensive backs coach. At the end of that season, they brought me on full-time and allowed me to assit with their summer strength and conditioning program. I coached for two seasons with them, before moving to the city of Phoenix where I began working as a physical therapy aid and fitness coach for a small physical therapy clinic located in Scottsdale. During my time there, my client list became filled with minor league baseball players, NFL, college, high school, and adults, that were there for rehab but transfered over as performance clients.
After a few years working in the Phoenix area, continuing to coaching high school football along with working as a PT aid, and I deciding to move back home to California. Once I arrived in California I took on another sports performance and fitness perfessional role in Carlsbad area for, at the time Velocity sports performance. A year later, I began working for my current company, EXOS (formerly known as Athletes Performance).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. There were plenty of struggles and plenty of mistakes that I have made over my career. In this industry, especially at that time, I didn’t get paid much. If I remember my first contract, was for $19,500 pre-tax, which isn’t much to live on.
I would start work most days with a commute from 45mins- 2hrs. I had groups starting at 530am and my final session of the day would end at 9 pm. At times I worked 3 or more jobs, bar security, IKEA, and high school coaching. There were times when my bank account was in the negatives. I sacrificed a lot of personal relationships and time to get to where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a performance specialist at exos, which means we pride oursleves on finding solutions for people to better their performance with any aspect of life. We base our philosophy off of four main pillars which are mindset, nutrtion, movement and recovery. We know that if we can help with one of those aspects, it should help improve them all, which should in terms improve someones over all quality of life.
Exos is a human performance and solutions-based company that has been around since 1999. Exos has over 400 sites that provide services for adult and comporate clients. Exos also has four legacy facilities (AZ, CA, TX, FL) which mainly focus on professional and ametour athletes. My role at our EXOS legacy facility located in Carlsbad is the facility manager and lead performance coach. I oversee our facility’s programming, staffing, and internal education.
My main areas of focus is with our pro elite clients, mainly NFL but also seeing other professional athletes such as tennis, baseball, and basketball.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I live by the saying, “that when opportunity knocks it’s too late to work.” I’ve always been a hard worker and I think my hard work has provided me with opportunities that some may view as luck. To me there is no such thing as luck when you are prepared and ready to react to anything that has been placed in front of you.
