Daily Inspiration: Meet Beatriz Barajas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatriz Barajas.

Hi Beatriz, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During the summer of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, I got inspired to get more into bitters and add a part of my culture to these creations. I was in a deep depression and had lost my job due to Covid, and from this hard situation it brought out my passion to create something that represented part of my culture and growing up Chicana. It started with my first flavor “Sabor A Mi” a hibiscus & cinnamon bitter, inspired by the hibiscus agua fresca my mom would always make. The names of my bitters are all inspired by memories growing up, by songs I grew up listening to, inspired by my family members and so much more.

I love bitters and I knew that there wasn’t many bitter creations out there that tapped into Mexican flavors. I wanted to create something familiar, something that would make people that didn’t know about hitters more intrigued and interested in using them. My goal has been to make bitters approachable and to be used in many different ways, not just for classic cocktails.

Today I have sold out of many collections and have many supporters and regular customers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t entirely been a smooth ride since bitters are still a very niche market. However, I have tapped into a market that also has so much potential and with the right marketing and my way of hospitality, it’s been helping to reach more customers. I’ve tapped into starting Zoom courses to chat about bitters basics and the many uses. This has made more people comfortable creating with them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create handcrafted & small batch cocktail bitters inspired by my Mexican cultura.

I am known for creating cocktails with my Chingona Bitters and making them approachable. My bitters are not only made with ingredients that are special to many but also have names that make you feel a certain way.

I am most proud of my latest fall/winter collection that sold out and had been a hit with many. Flanked inspired by my abuelita, my mom and the celebrations we have during the holidays. I strive to elicit beautiful memories from your life when you use Chingona Bitters.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve had my share of good luck, but a lot of bad luck as well. The bad luck has really been difficult, but it’s pushed me to do bigger things, to trust myself and to see what more I am capable of. The good luck had reminded me of the magic I have in my life. I honestly feel that the bad luck had been good luck in disguise for some situations in my life. I feel that this point of view had helped me pushed through some of the darkest times.
