Meet Jasmine Fitzwilliam of Let’s Frolic Together

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Fitzwilliam.

Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been an art-maker, even as a little kid growing up in Montreal. I was meant to tell stories, but it was quite a roundabout way that I came to wedding photography. I studied fine arts and graphic design in college in Canada, but always thirsted for adventures elsewhere.

After leaving the Canadian cold behind and moving to San Diego (yes, I miss speaking french and eating poutine), I ended up working as a brand strategist for quite a few years, while shooting portraits on the side. Eventually I found that working with big brands left a big gap for me emotionally and socially and left my batteries on empty too often. While working directly with real humans actually charged my batteries.

Highlighting their lived experiences, their joys, the people that matter to them, their adventures together, and all the connections between these parts—that is what gave my art more purpose.

I’ve been a full-time photographer of love stories for over four years, have a team of amazing women I work with both in the office and in the field that help me to make the magic happen for our incredible clients. Every day I thank my lucky stars!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was definitely a difficult decision to go full-time with my photography and leave the graphic design and brand strategy behind. I certainly miss parts of that world and life, though it was taking a big toll on me, on my mental and emotional wellness. It was particularly challenging to juggle so much, eventually I realized that I needed to make a change, to stop stagnating, to start prioritizing my own wellness, and start challenging myself to grow and learn in new ways.

Running a business is definitely not easy, and there was a whole lot of learning involved—technically, financially, managerially.

There are a ton of ins and outs, regulations, and all manner of challenges to be figured out. I never expected I’d not only find myself as a manager of other people let alone enjoy it!

Please tell us about Let’s Frolic Together.
We tell emotion-driven, wild, and joyful stories about people who are head over heels for each other. Wedding photography can too often be awkward and posed and uncomfortable. We believe one’s wedding day should be an absolute blast full of feels and good energy and laughter and love, and keeping our clients immersed in that joy is how we approach every wedding. Your emotional moments matter. Your inspired details matter.
