Meet Radina Veliova of Vocals on Stage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Radina Veliova.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my career as a vocal coach at the age of 18 when I joined a Pop Vocal Studio in my home town Vienna, Austria. It wasn’t like I planned on it but the studio owners asked me if I had any interest in becoming a teacher, only about a year after I had joined as a student. I was frightened but also excited. They trained me and gave me a basic foundation in vocal technique, vocal anatomy, and performance coaching but little did I know back then that I was barely scratching the surface of knowledge and science in Voice.

The good thing was that I’ve always been eager to learn, curious and interested.

I trained with many different teachers, studied jazz vocals at the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, and was mentored by some of the world’s best vocal coaches.

During the next years, I was working as a professional singer full time and a vocal coach part-time but I always loved teaching. I thrived on helping my students to become better singers and see their progress vocally until in 2010, I officially opened my vocal studio Vocals on Stage.

I was working as a vocal coach in Vienna, San Francisco, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, giving private and group lessons, having clients range from complete beginners to touring artists, boy bands, a cappella groups, solo artists, choir members, musical theater singers of all ages and backgrounds.

However, I still felt the interest to learn more, so I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Eastern New Mexico and am currently working towards my Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology with a specialization in Voice Therapy at the California State University Northridge.

Vocals on Stage is a music studio specialized in Voice & Artist Development. We coach clients in vocal training, performance, as well as guitar, piano, and songwriting. Located in Culver City, CA, we also offer lessons online and in-home on the Westside of LA.

My staff is as passionate about teaching music as I am and we really see it as our mission to bring knowledge and joy to people’s lives, helping them to achieve their musical goals while maintaining a healthy voice.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s a constant learning curve! When I opened my first commercial location, I had to deal with many challenges from permits to hiring coaches, managing schedules, etc. I am currently facing challenges as to how to balance my work life, graduate school, and my private life. While I still teach full-time, I also study (part-time) and have a family. It’s an interesting tide rope walk between being a student in one field, a master coach in another, and a mother (at first).

We’ve been impressed with Vocals on Stage LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Vocals on Stage™ is a music academy focused on singers/songwriters who want to improve their voice, piano, or guitar skills. With a focus on Voice and Vocal Health, we coach singers, actors, business professionals, teachers, kids, and more on how to sing with a healthy, sustainable technique and fulfill their vocal demands.

We offer Vocal, Piano, Guitar, Songwriting, Voice Over, and Accent Reduction lessons.

We start with the client’s goals and needs. Together we build a skill foundation, train in vocal technique, vocal style, performance, and general musicianship. Vocal technique combined with artistry and style.

We specialize in teaching Mix singing, which is the most sought-after singing technique in the industry and teaches students to smoothly transition through their registers to achieve one even vocal quality.

Blending registers effortlessly is an important starting point, whatever their musical style because their voices are strong, flexible, and reliable. Once the technique is mastered, we shift to phrasing, style, emotion, storytelling, etc. All the fun stuff that makes music so interesting.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Let’s start with the best: I love LA for its versatility in every area of life, from food to culture, to languages and more. It’s a melting pot of people with a variety of interests and talents and it never gets boring.

I personally love the weather here and the beaches! Closely followed by the amazing Food!

The thing I like least about LA is traffic, but I’ve become better at avoiding it.
