Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Buckingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Buckingham.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts with my community. I was born and raised in Venice, Ca, Where I drew inspiration from my environment, its people and my own spirited instinct. It was obvious that I would have entered a creative field as all the influences around me we’re abundant in art and self-expression. I am a stylist, film & tv costumer but, my emphasis is on photography. Through a lot of effort, perseverance and hard work, my successes are attributed to hustling hard and never giving up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any journey through any industry is never a smooth road. We only ever hear about people’s vast success but, what most don’t realize, especially in an artistic medium, there are always ten times more losses than wins. For every job I got, there were so many more jobs I was overlooked for and while that’s the name of the game, that can become discouraging. It took me a while to realize that being overlooked had nothing to do with my talent and that the art doesn’t always align with the business. It’s difficult and it will always be difficult but, I have found that my love for my art outweighs the bumps in the road.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I began working at the age of 18 with famed photographer David Lachapelle, who was my introduction into the industry and had a formative impact on my career. While working at his studio, I had opportunity to find connections and collaborators that I have worked with through my entire career. The most prominent being celebrity stylist Charlene Roxborough Konsker, working as a lead styling assistant for her massive roster. Simultaneously I have created BONESTHENSKIN my own independent branded content. Most recently, I teamed up with Chicago based artist Hebru Brantley costuming music video “Whomp Whomp” (Valee ft. Jeremiah) & then went on to assistant art direct and costume the Ty Hodges directed film “Venus as a Boy” starring Ty Hodges, Trace Lysette & Olivia Culpo.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Besides my professional collaborators, I owe a lot of my career and success to my parents & my close circle of friends, and that is self-explanatory.
