Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Lucas.
Hi Susan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been in Los Angeles pursuing and building my music and film career since 19 years old. It’s a journey to say the least but I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities to be able to do what I love.
I grew up in Camarillo, a small suburban town just outside of Los Angeles. Even though I lived near the city, I rarely was allowed to go into it. So, I spent my childhood looking for every performance opportunity I could find. From local theatre, improv, singing lessons and finding film groups within the Ventura County area. I am incredibly grateful for the Santa Paula theatre, Flying H Group, Ventura comedy club, Joyce McWilliams and House of Magic.
Art is what has always kept me centered during every season of life. I find it fascinating how stories through music and film can help, heal, uplift and move us as people.
A key turning point of recognizing I wanted to commit my life to creating art and perfecting my craft was when I lost my mom to cancer at 17. I learned invaluable lessons of time and realized that one of the things that matter most is the legacy we leave for ourselves. How we affected people, loved and cared for those around us. Also, to seek unlimited joy and love while we are here and have the opportunity to do. For me, this is through and with music and art. The stage is home, singing is serotonin and storytelling is a beautiful way to study and understand humanity.
I initially went to study fine and performing arts at Northwestern University in Louisiana. There I was graced with being a full-time student of theatre, fine arts and music on scholarship. Natchitoches is a small beautiful town but my hunger for a major city was calling and I so I made the leap of faith to follow it. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, I was incredibly green to how a major city operated. Often times getting lost and frustrated but knew at my core that this is where I was supposed to be…and I was right. I had and continue to have the opportunity to study with the best studios in Los Angeles that allow me to grow my craft and be a part of some incredible projects both in front and behind the camera and on stage. My musicality also began to develop in a beautiful way, teaching myself guitar and diving deeper into songwriting. For me, being in the city means recognizing how I can contribute to the beast of entertainment and also learn from it. I am completely humble in this journey and the invaluable lessons I continue to learn.
Fast forward to today and I am an independent musical artist, film producer and actress. I now have played at some incredible and iconic venues in Los Angeles and am excited to continue touring the city. I have toured San Francisco and Hawaii independently with an incredible team of people and continue to be blessed to create with them as well.
At the moment, I am focused on prepping all of my new music and visuals to be released, CHASING BUTTERFLIES and…maybe…a sister mixtape with this project. I’ve been working on getting the story right and am incredibly excited to launch soon!
You can find my music on all streaming platforms and my self-produced music videos on Vevo and youtube.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every artist has their struggles and one of my biggest ones has been believing in myself to succeed. I’m continuously working on my art and growth but tend to get in the way of recognizing my own worth in this industry. It’s a bit of imposter syndrome to a degree and always wanting to make sure I respect the work and craft to tell stories most effectively. But I’ve learned to get out of my own way, honor my intuition and to trust that I am here with purpose and value to add to this industry. It’s never been the multiple jobs or hard work that’s pushed me down, I think you just have to decide what you’re willing to fight for and proceed from there.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Developing my voice, songwriting and musicality has been my main focus. I love writing songs and am excited to continue to not only write my records but support other creatives in their journey as well. Or, if I am not supporting in the writing, then I am usually coming in to do vocals. Otherwise, acting is my passion and I love teaching script analysis and helping people unlock their own voices in singing and acting. My main focus right now though is getting my personal project ready for release.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to trust myself. To fight for my vision, stay consistent in my work and to make sure I continue to learn every aspect of the business…not just the creative side but the work that comes with making sure your creative side is protected. Don’t take shortcuts, learn the business so you can be a part of innovating it where you see flaws.
