Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Shabasov.
Hi Sasha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I was going to become a tattoo artist. Art was my passion. Growing up as an immigrant art is not a profession you got into or dropping out of college. My now husband always told me I can do it and he support me which gave me the confidence to drop out. When I found my mentor Rocky Darkroads saw something in me and has always been supportive of the art I do and helped me grow into the style, I do today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was very bumpy at first. I was working as a martial arts instructor, going to school full time and then running to the shop to follow my dreams. When I told my Russian parents that I’m dropping out, they were very upset with me. I had to work very hard to prove to them that I will be successful. I felt like I constantly had to prove things to people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a tattoo artist. I specialize in Black and Grey. My style is a mix of illustrative and American traditional. I like to create designs to give confidence to others or instill some kind of childhood joy. I am most proud of tattooing my mentor Rocky, it felt like I got the approval I was looking for! I think what sets me apart is the experience. My goal is to make your experience fun and enjoyable. I know tattoos hurt so being kind and funny always helps. Plus, my shading is not something I show before hand, since I know how to do it in my mind customers don’t get to see till the work is finished.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have so many. Obviously, my parents and little sister. My parents knew I was artist early and put me in art classes.
My husband Subin Choi gave me the push to become a tattoo artist and who let me practice on him.
Obviously, my mentor Rocky Darkroads who taught me dragged me in the right direction and a baby tattoo artist was born through that.
My friend Esther who was there for me and hyped me up when I needed it most.
My friends Lexy, Alice and Kayla who supported my art and who still get tattooed by me every other month.
