Conversations with Xela Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xela Black.

Hi Xela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began when I was young but began to flourish into a career about a year ago. I’ve written music for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until last year that I found an incredible producer, Chris Melee, and began making my first EP. This wasn’t just the beginning of one project, it was the start of many adventures to come.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest, I’d like to tell you about the many struggles that came with the first EP, but for the most part everything was in synchronicity. The cover of the EP, the name and the songs on it really created themselves. It didn’t require too much thought. It wasn’t exactly the healthiest period of time for me, but certainly not the worst.

Though the EP went well, beginning as an artist has its own challenges. It was about four years ago that I realized it’s not just writing songs and singing them anymore. I had to become a composer, a producer (to a certain degree), a better musician, a manager, a real performer and a video director. These are things I did dream of being a part of, but I will admit to the struggle of learning it all at very rapid rate. Though I will admit that I’ve secretly enjoyed every part of it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer/songwriter from Orange County. Performing is my niche and songwriting follows just behind that. A majority of my proudest moments come from after I’ve played a show or wrote a really solid song. I can truly say that there is no better feeling to me. Persistence has been the biggest strong suit for me when thinking about what sets me apart. I fell in love with music when I was two and have always known what I was going to do with no doubt in my mind.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck is more of an abstract idea in my head. I’ve had one specific moment in my life where I believe that ‘luck’ would be the only word to describe the encounter I had. I think it was late 2016 that I was fortunate to meet somebody who believed in me as much as I did and had supplied to me a plethora of instruments to create a home studio to make my music at a professional level. For that, I’ll forever be grateful.
