Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Boinay.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ever since I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to live in Hawaii. I didn’t know then how much of an influence and impact it would make on my life and future artistic career! In 2010, I moved from Oregon to Oahu to finish college. I majored in Fine Art, with an emphasis on painting, and unlike most of my college friends, I never left once I graduated. I had found home in Hawaii and decided to make my life there. I worked hard to figure out the best path forward in an art career. I attended every art festival, event, gallery show I could and made an effort to introduce myself to the local artists and store owners. I spent every day painting and creating, building a portfolio so that one day soon I too could participate in those festivals and art shows. I wanted to be part of the artistic community, selling my paintings for a living and I was determined to make that happen. I spent the next eight years selling my paintings (and doing those art shows!) and enjoying my career. In 2018 I moved off island for a few years to explore other places (I ended up in Arizona and briefly in Washington!) and I’ve just made my way back home to Oahu again where I’ve put down roots once more. It’s been a journey of triumphs and struggles, but I’m grateful I worked hard to lay that foundation so I could be where I am at today! I am excited for a new chapter in life back home on this little island, where new adventures and inspirations await.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Nothing ever is! It can be very difficult to get your foot in the door at a store or gallery if you are a new/unknown artist. You have to pay your dues and start small, and that is okay! The right person will give you a chance to shine and that’s what matters. Find your tribe. It is all part of the growing process. Another struggle has been that Hawaii is an expensive place, so I learned to make many sacrifices. You learn to live with less, which, I prefer that sort of lifestyle anyway. I’m not into having lots of material things. For me, beauty of life is more about experiences, places and people to share it with.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to use bright, warm, fun, inviting colors in my paintings. I’m not a realist painter, but instead try to capture a good, happy energy into my work for others to feel. I specialize in beachscapes and landscapes with beautiful tropical flowers. I hope to provide an escape to a beautiful, warm, inviting and happy place for people to connect with when they see my paintings!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is painting or doing creative projects with my sisters when I was little. We used to create whole imaginary worlds together!
