Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Jaime.
Hi Samantha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It started with a mix of painting and dance. Since I was little, my parents always pushed me into the art field whether it came to music, painting, dancing, etc. I looked up to Madonna, burlesque dancers, Frida Kahlo, and many other dancers and painters. Thankfully I have my family who were also fascinated with arts and pushed me to doing what I love. With dance, I figured that I can also paint faces not just on canvases. I was always in a dance class after school and went to a performing arts school. With my dad having me grow up admiring Guillermo Del Toro & Tim Burton, it paved a wave for me to jump into Special Effects Makeup. Having both paint and dance as a background reference, I learned how both go hand in hand in front of the camera or stage.
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to pursue my career in arts. No matter what it is, it just has to be in art. While going to college, I enrolled to a beauty school as well. It wasn’t easy juggling both but I managed to get through. I got my license for makeup and Special Effects. That’s where I learned everything I need to pursue as a makeup artist and Special Effects has opened up so many doors and opportunities to me and I can’t wait to see what else I will do in the future. I owe everything to Special Effects Makeup, I appreciate everything about it, and I wouldn’t have been able to do the work I’ve done thanks to it. I love creating all types of looks and making people look like a completely different person or creatures.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. There’s a lot of competition and a struggle to get booked when you first start of especially as a MUA who wants to work in the music/film industry. There’s a lot of up and downs to get where you want to be. Many will question your artistic abilities as a regular makeup artist but when they saw I also did Special Effects Makeup that’s when they started to take me seriously and I was getting booked for music videos. There’s not many WOC/POC in this industry and I will show that we can make it up there too. Prioritizing your goals is what should always be important.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I am most proud of is learning how to do Special Effects Makeup/Prosthetics. I can make my own prosthetics while I go from set to set or even just one on one with a personal client. There’s not many Special Effects classes out here in Los Angeles, so it was a struggle learning all this from scratch. I am happy with my work and will continue to grow my brand within the coming year.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Not many people know that my prosthetics are hand made by me, a Latina born and raised in Los Angeles. Also, surprisingly a lot of people in the industry are not from Los Angeles, so very few times I run to an actual native of Los Angeles. So I am excited to show people how easily I can move from communities and fit theirs needs in FX or just a regular glam look.
