Inspiring Conversations with Mary Ortenburger of Insight Family Therapy Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Ortenburger.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a psychotherapist in the field, I first began my work at a residential eating disorder program post-graduate school. Following my work at this treatment center, I transitioned to a county funded clinic, conducting individual and therapy sessions with adolescents and children. After five years, I transitioned to private practice, where I continue to work seeing clients struggling with trauma, eating disorders, relational issues, and dissociative disorders. I am a certified eating disorder specialist and supervisor, a certified EMDR therapist and supervisor, a certified gestalt therapist, and a registered yoga instructor. I have studied trauma-informed yoga and am currently in an 850-hour program to become a certified yoga therapist. I opened a trauma-informed studio next to my practice and hold trauma-informed group classes on the weekends.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been easy at times and of course challenging as well-such is any type of growth we are passionate about! Part of the excitement and the challenge is finding your way in terms of your areas of interest, increasing your knowledge in areas you specialize in, and keeping things interesting and dynamic. As a psychotherapist your work can be ever-changing, and continually finding training to support you can be a bit of a learning curve as your clientele shift and change as well. At the county, I was on a crisis team that did involuntary hospitalization for teens who were suicidal, which was difficult and heartbreaking at times. I saw intense and awful trauma working for the county and continue to hear of horrific abuse in private practice as well. I am truly honored to serve as a healing space for these clients, despite the sadness I make contact within my work.

As you know, we’re big fans of Insight Family Therapy Group, Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a LMFT specializing in trauma, eating disorders, couples therapy, dissociative disorders, trauma-informed yoga, and EMDR. My training and certification in Gestalt therapy highly inform how I intervene with clients in my psychotherapy practice, and I blend trauma modalities into my work as appropriate and needed. I have a trauma-informed yoga studio for adjunct services for clients and members of the community.

What’s next?
My next goal is working towards my C-IAYT, or a certified yoga therapist. This training spans over the course of three years, and I am currently in year two of this process. This training will allow me to acquire extensive knowledge in conducting both group and individual yoga therapy sessions and involves working with physical pain and ailments as well as the emotional components of suffering. I am also training in perinatal mental health, and plan to blend body work into my practice for parents struggling with postpartum anxiety, depression, or who have suffered birth trauma.

Pricing:
