Today we’d like to introduce you to Dror.
Hi Dror, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I love a lot of soulful singers like Amy Winehouse and Sam Cooke, plus growing up, Ne-Yo and Usher were really popular. I think the music I’m making now is a fusion of it all: modern R&B, hip-hop and pop.
I would write songs and test them out on my family, often asking “who wrote this one” to see if they would guess a real singer.
Come college, I joined an a cappella group and produced my first song, one that became an overnight sensation. It was the fall of 2014 and Snapchat had just piloted its campus story feature, selecting The University of Texas at Austin (where I went) as one of the first two schools in the nation for its trial run. A UT-focused anthem I wrote called “Put ’Em Up” went viral, receiving over 20,000 views in 24 hours.
People started tweeting about it. Yik Yak was also a forum at the time, and people would talk about it on there. I realized it had the potential to get more attention, and thus I turned the hook into a full song and ended up filming a video with some athletes I was friends with on the football team.
After the original success with “Put ’Em Up,” I took a step back to discover who I wanted to be in the music industry. I interned at Sony Music during my junior year and made it to a fourth callback for NBC’s “The Voice.”
Since then, I’ve been exploring my sound through several singles, and I’m currently working on my debut project.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving to LA right before the pandemic hit posed some challenges as it slowed down the process of getting to meet new people and collaborations with various creatives took a pause. I used quarantine to write a lot and am excited that things have picked back up lately.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m ready to introduce my homegrown Texas buzz to the world. My upcoming releases showcase a rugged, soulful sound, and with a vintage style of my own, I’m working to carve out a unique lane for myself.
Currently based in LA, my southern roots are a key influence in my new music. Old school vibes pair with modern production to create a distinct Texas swagger. Unapologetic and bold, my latest release, “90s Winona,” is the first track to feature my evolved, alternative sound. Everything I’m working on feels organic and like the most fun, I’ve had while creating.
I’ve already landed top spots on several global Amazon Music playlists and nods from local and national publications ranging from wide-reaching Texas publications like Tribeza and The Houston Chronicle to national tastemakers like Milk and Early Rising. I’m ready to bring Texas pop to the masses.
“Every aspect of Dror’s aesthetic as an artist is gorgeously polished, and it’s largely self-produced.” – The Houston Chronicle.
“He has a timeless quality that plays to an era of days past, but with modern influences, much like his personal taste in music” – Tribeza.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are at summer camp in Texas. I went to a sleep away camp in the Texas Hill Country in Wimberley, Texas for several years, and it was some of the best memories of my life. It even gave me my first opportunities to perform at the annual talent shows. Some of my closest friends to this day are still friends I met there.
