Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Amann.
Hi Skylar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a Norwegian-American family, I knew that Southern California offered a lot, but I wanted more. From the age of five, I was involved in the theatre community and as I got older, television and film seemed more appealing. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from California State University of Long Beach where I had a male professor tell me I needed to hurry to become successful in the Film /TV world because women have a shelf life. This phrase changed my life. Like most young 22 years old, I had no idea what direction I would head to next. I started auditioning and auditioning with a lot more no’s than I had hoped. Once I changed my mindset, I saw rejection as a form of redirection. I started reading more, taught myself Swedish and knitting, volunteering at the Sjømannskirken in San Pedro, and enjoying life. Living in France in 2019, I acquired how to milk cows and my neighbor, Maïwenn Lefevre taught me how to become a beekeeper and create my own honey. All the while joining a Theatre improv troupe without knowing French. Fast forward to today where I continue acting in Los Angeles and France and voicing on the importance of Animal Rights and encouraging others to leap and trust that the net will appear. My next task is completing my master’s and furthering my Artistic Voice in France.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming from a multicultural family, I knew nothing in life would be given easily. Growing up, both of my parents worked multiple jobs. My father is actively in the Navy and was deployed for a large chunk of my childhood. My mother is an inspiration and godsend because she allowed my sister and I to pursue anything we wanted and she made it work. Our household was built on the idea that hard work leads to all you want in life. Personally, it still is a hard road because now the art of film is more influenced by social media and influencers. I grew up studying Meisner, Uta Hagen, Lee Strasbourg, and Anton Chekov but these names don’t really mean anything to many today. We need to remember that theatre, film, and tv are art forms that are easily overlooked. Challenges inspire me to accomplish anything even if it takes years because nothing is impossible. It literally says I’m possible. The people you associate yourself with also impact you and thankfully, I have chosen a great family that inspires, provokes, and intrigues me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I am an actress based in Los Angeles and France, and I specialize in theatre work but occasionally pursue film and television. For the past couple of years, I have continuously worked with improv troupes in France and Norway. What sets me apart is that I speak four languages, know how to bee-keep and proudly say I’ve lived in three countries. Having worked in all three countries has allowed for me to learn their acting techniques and apply it to whatever work I have ahead. A production I am most proud of was a theatre devised piece called Unwound inspired by the Bacchae directed by Chelsea Anne. I put so much of myself into the character and was awarded a financial grant for the role. The high-like feeling that comes from doing something live, whether it be TV or theatre, no words can explain the euphoria you get when you know you did all you could. When it’s reciprocated with the audience, it makes it that much better.
What are your plans for the future?
Within this next year, I will be spending more time back in Nantes, France where I am based for a few months of the year. I am looking forward to the arts reopening and life becoming the way it used to be. France closed almost everything the past year, so the arts community really struggled. I am also excited to work with a friend of mine based in Paris to create content and bring back the love of film rather than just the commercialization. The ultimate dream is to star in French cinema, and it is doable now I am fluent. I am just excited to see where life brings me and the people I get to meet along the way.
