Today we’d like to introduce you to Nayeli Martinez.
Hi Nayeli, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles Area. I am the proud daughter of immigrant parents who were born in Mexico. I got my first job at 17 years old and I have always prided myself in being independent. I attended El Camino College and eventually transferred to University of California, Davis (UCD). I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I am passionate about all things related to psychology and the mental health field. I love working with underserved and underrepresented communities. I currently work a full-time position supporting children who have developmental disabilities or delays. Additionally, I work part-time as a graduate assistant for my master’s program. I always knew I wanted to further my education beyond a bachelor’s degree and after three long years, I finally decided it was time, so I applied. I am currently wrapping up my first year as a graduate student at Pepperdine University and I am in the Masters in Clinical Psychology program with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy with Latinx. The population I hope to work with is children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. The goal is to eventually have my own private practice and possibly go back for my PsyD.
In March 2021, I started Nay’s Cositas. I was encouraged to start my own business page on Instagram selling my handmade macrame products. It was the best decision I have made. It all started in my living room during the pandemic. I initially started making macrame plant hangers as a way to cope with the stress of being stuck at home, working from home, and being a first-year graduate student. Creating is a therapeutic process for me and allows me to unplug and recharge. I have met so many amazing individuals and like-minded small business owners. It is an amazing feeling to know that people love your work just as much as you do. I am grateful for this small business community and I am eager to see where this takes me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As far as my education, it has definitely not been the easiest. Imposter syndrome is real and difficult to overcome. I put aside graduate school for three years due to fears of not being accepted and/or not having the necessary qualifications. I questioned whether it was a field I would thrive in. I was terrified at the idea of not getting accepted into a clinical psychology program because there is no other field I see myself in. After three years of saying, “maybe next year” I finally got the courage to just go for it. I strongly believe in timing and the concept that everything happens for a reason. I love my program and I honestly do not see myself in any other program.
In addition, higher educational is ridiculously expensive. The financial burden of loans is overwhelming. That is definitely another factor that prevented me during those three years. I have come to terms that education is an investment and it is the best investment I am doing for myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I taught myself all the macrame knots and started making all kinds of products with macrame. I am able to make plant hangers, wall hangs, macrame rainbows, fruit hammocks, keychains, pacifier clips, bags, dog collars, tassels, etc. I love learning how to make new items and practicing new knots. I enjoy selling my products at an affordable price, although I do consider my time, energy, and own money spent. I started selling my products not with the idea of profit in mind, instead affordable products that others would enjoy just as much as I do. I only make and sell items that I personally love and would buy myself. I appreciate feedback and suggestions because it allows me to grow and learn.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I work a full-time position and a part-time position on top of my small business on the side. Time management and prioritizing have become essential.
