Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Saul.
Hi Kat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Music City. Being surrounded by such amazing songwriting inspired me to start creating at a very young age. My parents had me in church choir, and I had stolen my brother’s guitar and learned guitar from the substitute Spanish teacher after school. It was Nashville after all. By the time I was in high school, I was writing in professional sessions and in a rock band at school. I didn’t really know what my artist project was until I got to college (Belmont University) when my friend Jordan said to me “Kat, you know these songs you’re writing in the dorm are pop songs, right?”. This was mind-blowing to me, and suddenly, it all clicked. I signed my first management deal soon after that brought me up to New York and then to LA. By my senior year, I was back and forth for writing sessions. After graduating in December 2019, I moved to LA January of 2020. It felt like the natural step since I was flying here so often and my family was in Nashville to come back to. Adjusting to a new city during the pandemic was wild, but it inspired lots of art, including an EP that I released independently in November.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there have been obstacles. However, none so strong as myself. Coming from a background of session writing, it took me a second to find my own voice. I still get insecure and scared to share my story. I have very bad anxiety/depression (I address this in my song “Monsters”), which adds insult to injury there. Moving to LA actually helped dramatically though. This is the most free, least judgemental place. Being different here is praised. Plus, being on my own, away from friends and family, it pushed me to really listen to my guts and call my own shots as a creative.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m incredibly proud of my recent EP, ‘Made in the 90s’. It’s an alt pop project dedicated to reflecting on the past and coming to realize how it makes you who you are today. As a writer, I’m most recently stoked on a cut with Loote, “All The F*cking Time”. I just love making raw, angsty music that tells it like it is. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good metaphor, but sometimes the fluff can clutter the emotion. And that’s what music is, right? Pure emotion.
What’s next?
I am currently working on a new EP for 2021 🙂
