Today we’d like to introduce you to Marysol Roman.
Hi Marysol, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I think we all can agree that 2020 was an impactful year for us all. Before the pandemic started, I was working at a restaurant as a server shortly after I lost my job due to the stay at home order. I didn’t want to just be home with nothing to do, so I decided to pick up some baking tools and teach myself how to bake and decorate cakes. I have always had a thing for baking so it wasn’t so hard for me to start getting the hang of it. With lots of trial and error and also with the help of YouTube, I slowly started to get better at it. I would receive feedback from friends and family and I slowly started to become comfortable enough to make cakes for my families birthday parties. A couple of months into my practicing, I decided to open up my Instagram page for @cakesbymaryyy to start showcasing the cakes I was creating. It took a lot of time, patience, and learning but I didn’t give up and decided to work hard to get to where I am today and as the days go by, I am still learning and working towards perfecting my craft.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. A lot of people think that I went to culinary school to learn what I know but the reality is that I am still learning as I go and I’ve had to make mistakes in order to improve my work. Even though I have been running my small business for over a year now, I still find myself struggling at times. There’s a lot that goes into running a small business that I didn’t know about. Not only do I struggle with baking and cake decorating at times but also with things like managing my social media page and time management.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run a small business called @cakesbymaryyy. I specialize in decorating custom cakes for any special occasion. I am most known for my rustic style cakes. I am very proud of myself for continuing to push forward with my small business while balancing school and building the clientele that I now have. I am also very thankful for having the support of my parents throughout the journey because if it wasn’t for their help and support, I wouldn’t be able to do this alone. I believe that my style and creativity set me apart from others in the industry.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the city of Santa Ana. I was born and raised in this city and currently still reside here. One thing I like best about our city is that everyone from here is always looking out for one another and supporting when needed. Most of my clients also live in my city which is how I am able to see the support they have for small businesses. If there was one thing I would need to say that I like least about our city would be the lack of programs to help people from the community grow or start any small business, they’re interested in.
