Life & Work with Tyler Nix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Nix.

Tyler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Someone once asked me, “Do you really want it?” As a freelance photographer in Los Angeles, photography has to be more than just a hobby, but rather, a passion. Photography, in my opinion, is more than just simply shooting. Other key components such as people skills, business skills, time management, and raw talent are essential to experience any sort of success.

Photography has always been a large passion of mine. In January of 2017, I had a friend ask me to take photos of her on my iPhone. Because I’m always the one to go above and beyond in just about anything, I broke out my mom’s Nikon D60 (it’s crazy old, I know), the first DSLR camera I had ever touched, and I just went for it. I was very impressed with the photos I got, so I convinced my mom to let me take that to LA.

Ever since that day, my photography has very quickly advanced to better quality photos and a whole new eye for what’s out there. I was eventually able to make the “Nikon to Canon” jump since I now shoot on a Canon 5D Mark III (best decision I ever made). Since beginning, photography has swiftly transformed itself from a low-level hobby to a full-blown passion. I take advantage of every opportunity given and always make the most of it!

Since the beginning of COVID-19, Tyler Nix Creative has expanded more than I could have imagined. I’ve expanded the brand beyond myself to now working with a fully functioning team. Our goal for each individual we work with is to really show off and illuminate every detail of the story. If a vision is laid in front of us, we strive to not only expand that vision but find the fine detail that many may not see on a first look. That is what makes Tyler Nix Creative unique, the ability to seek what is often overlooked.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been anything but a smooth road. Living in Los Angeles already has its challenges by itself, however starting a business with no clients, hardly any experience, and a huge road ahead of you full of creatives that can do what you do just 10x better makes the road anything but smooth. Even in personal battles, I’ve had to face many obstacles that hindered my business growth. One of the largest of those being a complete tear of my ACL that left me on crutches and in recovery for nearly a year. I’m graced to have had the opportunities and incredible clients that worked with me through that time, but fighting to keep up with the pace makes that all the more difficult. Needless to say, to make it in LA from nothing to abundant will never be an easy task. Success is relative in my eyes and I’m far from what I consider “success”. My mentality from day 1 of freelance to now has always been the same…take it day by day and keep fighting to the next month. Eventually, success will come if you never quit. If you don’t quit, you win.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Los Angeles-based photographer willing to take any job that comes my way. I’m currently creating fun and engaging content both in lifestyle and studio settings for the most incredible clients across the globe.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Behind the scenes. If you took at my studio set up then look at my portfolio, they almost wouldn’t align. I have had to battle to learn with nearly nothing to work with to get good at what I do. I’m pleased to say that I’ve been able to create stunning content with what was in my hand, making it enough. As I’ve had the opportunity to upgrade and get better, so does the content. However, you’d never know any of that by just looking at my content. I believe the best tools are the ones already in your hand. It just matters what you make of it.
