Rising Stars: Meet Jordan Harvell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Harvell.

Hi Jordan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
At the age of 15, I lost my Bestfriend known as my father. I watched something I saw happen in movies happen to me. I didn’t know what to think or how to feel I just knew it all felt so surreal. Life hit fast I had to choose between staying home in a place that meant memories of what used to be or going away to school to Create opportunities & change for myself. I chose to create endless opportunities for myself because I didn’t want to be reminded of what never made me feel whole anymore. Depression was real, I never talked to anyone I was my own diary. If I had to cry myself to sleep at night, I would. If I had to write in my diary I would, whatever it took to keep me going I made sure I did it. People were there but they couldn’t understand the pain. It was just me, my mom and my siblings. Everyone left to grieve in their own way. I graduated from Grand Canyon University with my bachelor’s degree in sociology. I studied the development of human society. I studied people. I love people, and helping others was a part of who I truly was. I had to find a way to express myself to the world. I began a career in behavior therapy working with children with autism. Working with children in the behavior field changed my life, I looked at everything different. I felt like all I wanted to do now was help people, put smiles on people’s face, make them feel whole too.

I finally discovered that helping people find their joy, what makes them happy, & their life abilities was who I truly am. I realized everybody in life has a story it’s all about making sure you as a person make it out of yours. The more good I put into the world the better I began to feel. It was selfless acts that made me feel whole. I’ve always been a perfectionist, feeling as if everything has to be a specific way or just perfect. I realized what was not perfect to me was perfect in other’s eyes. Hair as always been a passion along with loving to cook. But hair is me it allows me to express myself and my feelings in a creative way. I began doing hair for my friends, brothers, and those around me. I began doing Locs, often known as dreadlocks. People prefer Locs. I began doing box braid styles and natural Style outs for men & women. Word of mouth got around that I did hair and people actually liked my work. In 2019 At the time, I was working for an in-home client and in school with a client. I began to receive texts and calls about hair every other day. I began to do hair when I could, weekends, off days, whenever my time permitted I would make sure I got people in and gave them the look they wanted. More and more people began to find out and spread the word so I decided I need to create an Instagram but what would my name be. I began to say slogans and decided which would be best.

Getting the look that’s appealing to you. Providing people with a comfortable experience where they are putting self back into self-care. It wasn’t easy some days, I thought will someone text me to do their hair, do people really like my work. Then about two-three months in business began picking up. I began to get more inquires about me servicing people. From there, it was history. I was working two jobs and doing hair. From finding time to keep up with time and create it was something new. I was so amazed that I was making it happen. People began to work with me, they didn’t care if it was early morning, late in the weekday or the weekends. They just knew they wanted me touching their crown. Once I had a stable client-based and things began to pick up, I decided why not make my own products, I had already been playing around with recipes due to me constantly coloring my hair red. Red was symbolized by pain & my strength, so I felt It always had to be fresh. I didn’t feel myself if I wasn’t red. Oils became my Bestfriend and taking care of my hair to make sure my texture never changed and stopping hair fall.

From there, I thought I was a new chemist. I decided why not begin making products not just catering to Locs, but braids, natural styles & natural hair. I began to mix, research. and test that’s all I knew. I finally found and magic potion for oil, shampoo, conditioner, and beard oil. I wanted a product line that provided moisture, sensation and reminded people that taking care of you can often start with our skin and crown. I knew I would have the chance to test it on my clients because it became a part of the care routine in which I provided with their experience. More and more people began to ask what’s that, did you make it yourself. I knew right then it was going to take me further on my journey. Here I am today making products and making sales to not only my clients but those who have heard about it word of mouth or referral. My product line is a product line based to minimize room for loss in order to maximize room for growth. It’s a product brand based for all hair types. I want to teach people to love themselves again. Life is hard who isn’t going through something or hasn’t been through everything already, I mean look at us we are living in a pandemic, and if you made it out it’s a blessing. The greatest power we hold.

As people is to be ourselves. The Loc Appel is me, everything I am and have I put into it. It’s a one woman show. People come to their appointment, but often it’s more the. That. It’s a sense of peace, I provide them a space of understanding, freedom to be themselves, and no judgment. Everyone needs someone. Our possibilities are endless if we create them to be. There are no handouts, life was never promised to be easy or given a free ride. We are the driving force in our own lives. We have the steering wheel! Only we know the direction we want to go. I’ve been through so much I can’t explain. Mentally, physically, & emotionally. The person I am today is a strong individual who wants to show everybody what they’re capable of whatever you put your mind to. Ambition is endless, you have to unleash your best you.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is ever smooth. Some days are extremely hard and some days are a breeze. I’m nowhere near where I plan to be. Everyday is a lesson. Sometimes a lesson learned and often things are just that lessons. The number one lesson through any process is to always be teachable. Nobody is always right! You’ll have some long days, &. Very long nights. You have to want it as bad as you say you do. Support won’t be there from the people you expect to be there 90% of the time. Often times the support comes from the people on the outside. It’s the people who don’t know you get to know you who knows you best often. You have to stay focused on the goal. How you start your day plays a big role in everyday of your life. Find a routine for you. Who doesn’t love sleep, yeah waking up early sucks. You’ll lose yourself & find yourself again along every process. No life won’t be perfect nothing ever will be. Struggles along the way are truly not planning, time management, communication. Communication is huge when having a business, you have to communicate with people. We are all human and things happen but stay consistent, true and communicate.

Budget, make sure to budget, always create list and make sure to stay on top of things. Being organized goes a long way! Looking for yourself in others is a disappointment you have to really look at what your building as your child. You create something but make sure it grows up to be something or someone beneficial to the world to make society better. Obstacles will always arise but how you respond will determine the initial outcome. You must stay focused and make sure you want it as bad as you say you do. I began to get more focused, business-wise, money management-wise, and just worked on things little at a time. Time management is a huge struggle. You must make time for the things that matter toward your future. Many times, we place things we feel we must do over things we should do. Plan, write it down. It is not real or a plan until it is written down. Often as people living in society norms, we put pressure on ourselves to live up to others’ expectations or what the world perceives to be the right image of a human in society being perfect. Perfect does not exist, every day is something new to be Learned.

I specialize in natural hair care. Natural hair care is my passion. I specialize in dreadlocks also known as Locs, box braids, twist individuals, and natural hairstyles. People are passionate as to how you refer to their crown, respect it! I am most proud of finding a way to connect with people. Hair appointments at The Loc Appeal are not just hair appointments they are like therapy sessions. I listen, I give and ear, I give advice, I motivate people, I make people feel as if they are somebody because they are. Often people need someone, whether you know it or not everyone needs someone. Someone who is pure, the energy is free, and a spirit out of this world. What sets me apart from other people is that I do not care about the money, yes, it is a factor. Honestly, this is for the people. I want to give the people a place of peace where they know I am okay when I am with her or the feeling they know they will be able trust. It is a sacred and safe place. I provide my clients with hair care tips and tools that will help them in the long run. When it comes to dreadlocks aka locs, it is a sacred journey they say watch who you let touch your crown, your journey is sacred. I want to change the way and idea in which dreads are looked at. Once dreads were not even allowed in the workplace. It had the image of being “dirty”. People have connation’s on things that they have no culture on. People must learn the new culture. They symbolize new life, new patience, and new strength. People often discover their true selves on their journeys. Locs are not just hair it is your life and who you are. I am most proud of staying focused in life and especially during a pandemic.

It was during the pandemic when I decided I wanted to take my business further and grow it into something everyone can love. What makes me different is also that fact I have never used my struggles as the light to define who I am and what I am capable of. I am capable of whatever I put my mind to. I created a product brand-based to minimize room for loss and create room for growth. My line helps to provide the crown with the nutrients it needs to retain moisture, rid scalp problems, reinstate hair follicles, promoting hair growth, & much more. Many of my clients have had bald spots, patches, areas that will not grow and with the help of my products, they have seen major improvement. That is all I want for people I want them to feel like themselves, whole again. When you love yourself entirely, it is no greater feeling? Everyone goes through life adversities, hardships, and losses. It’s all about how you let it define you. You must be bigger than what you go through and understand you will grow through it. Teaching people to put self-back into self-care little at a time. Having clients with autism, chemo clients, and elders who are having hair problems have showed me that my products work and it can give people hope again. When the people are happy, I am happy. It’s only the beginning of what is to come.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important qualities I feel play a role in my success is that I know I am nowhere where I need to be. Everyday is teachable. You must be persistent, passionate, self-discipline, and committed to learning. Being persistent means doing things even when you do not want to but still having the same motive in the end. You must go into everyday willing to put your best foot forward to make sure everyday is different than the day before. You must be able to communicate. Communication goes a long way. If you cannot communicate how will you run a business, but also be able to understand everybody communicates differently. You must love what you do to do it every day. The biggest lesson we often learn in life is doing things because others are, others like it or think it’s cool. You only know what’s best for you. Passion comes from the soul. I love people so that helps me love my job, knowing I want to give people a haven. Self-discipline is important, if you do not control how you think, speak, react, things will be hard. For me, I must be disciplined when it comes to everything because it’s just me running a business, no help or handouts. I must train myself to obey the laws I put into place for my own life so it can be effective in everything I do. I am big on every day is teachable, because every day you learn something new whether big or small. Success is for everybody you just must make sure being persistent to get success too.
