Rising Stars: Meet Ty Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Chen.

Hi Ty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the industry for over ten years now. I first started as a teen model and actor, and along the way, I picked up photography. I’ve been on various TV shows, commercials and print ads. As for photography, my main focus is fashion and editorial photography, but I also do headshot photography for aspiring actors, models and professionals like myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think starting a new business venture, especially in the arts, is always hard. You never know when your next job opportunity will be and you always have to hustle and put yourself out there. I’m glad to have had support from my family along the way and I’m very thankful for my friends who have helped guide me through my journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I first got into photography because I fell in love with fashion editorials. To this day, my best and most creative work has been the fashion editorials I’ve shot. I think it’s quite liberating to shoot something so beautiful and creative and I love that it’s a group effort. I’ve also worked with a lot of celebrity talent, especially from my days as a magazine editor and photographer for Desnudo Magazine Italia. Nowadays, I spend most of my time taking headshots for actors since I know exactly what it’s like being both in front of and behind the camera and developing new models by taking photos for their portfolios.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that Hollywood is such a melting pot of cultures. I love the diversity here, I think there’s room for everybody in some way or another. My least favorite part is the homelessness has really gotten out of hand, especially since the pandemic. I wish there were some way to help out.
