Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Marie.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to NYC from Colorado in my late twenties to pursue my acting career. In the city, I was lucky enough to take classes with some of the top coaches, as well as work on several projects from films to tv shows. My boyfriend wrote a TV pilot which we filmed in LA, in which I had a part in. Once that pilot started to pick up steam in LA, my boyfriend and I decided to move to the west coast. As we got settled into LA, we had decided to shift gears from acting to horse racing.
My boyfriend, Randy grew up with the sport and introduced me to it. We then met AJ on the set of the TV pilot we shot and decided it would be a great idea to start a podcast about horse racing. After watching a lot of the other horse racing podcasts and watching what was on YouTube, we realized horse racing needs a different type of show and a more entertaining angle to the sport. The Triple Clowns premiered on YouTube, iTunes, Spotify and all podcast platforms bringing handicapping, skits, interviews, news, and live shows. In addition, us three clowns brought the angle in which Randy grew up with it, I knew very little at the time, and AJ knew nothing at the time. We started our podcast at the beginning of 2020 and by the end of March and the start of COVID the everything as we knew it came to a halt. We were just getting into the heart of all the prep races for the Kentucky Derby and then all of a sudden, all tracks stopped running. At first, we were not sure what to do but continued to move forward and bring entertainment to the horse racing world. Once the horse racing industry adjusted to the new way to run the sport in the world of COVID, we were back to talking about the races and the new 2020 Kentucky Derby trail. We were lucky enough to get some of the industry’s greats on our show from Gary Stevens to Laffit Pincay III and several of the TVG hosts, trainers, jockeys, track announcers, authors, etc.
Our show was taking off, and we were meeting the most amazing people and fans. I started a Women in Horse racing series, in which I wanted to showcase some of the women in the industry and show people that there are women in this industry that know the sport and are not just there to wear the Derby hat and watch one race a year. Once the show started evolving more, we created several different series from match races, to Handicapping 101, to The Equine Files where we talk about the odd stories that have happened, pick shows, weekly shows, and more live shows.
We are becoming a face for the younger generation, and we are constantly working on ideas of how to get the younger generation into horse racing. Just take 1 step into Santa Anita and the beauty alone will take your breath away. There is so much to admire about the sport, and sports gambling is huge. My generation and the younger generation bet on sports all the time from football to basketball. We want to show people that betting on horse racing is just as fun, if not more. I mean, we took $1 and won enough money to pay for a trip to Disney World. The sports really takes you in. I would love to see Santa Anita fill its stands with young faces and see the sport really pickup. Recently we were lucky enough to sign with Degen Nation to produce horse racing content for their YouTube channel as well.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all, there were many times I would stop and think what am I doing. There were times I wanted to quit. We treated our podcast like a new business so building an organic following from the ground up is not always easy. In addition, I was new to even talking about the sport. Horse racing is a very niche topic, and you have to build trust with your guests, especially if you are going to be talking gambling. Horse players are very passionate people and are very vocal if they disagree. We put ourselves out there, so we are always prepared for any negativity. It is not always easy, but you just have to move forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Triple Clowns in a horse racing podcast, bringing entertainment to the sport. We have been reported on for being the face of the younger generation of horse racing. This is not something we specifically were aiming for, but this industry needs a face for the younger generation. We have come along way with our shows. I have learned so much about the sport and how to even talk about the sport. What terms to use, how to handicap a race, and how to talk about handicapping. I even had to teach myself editing on the fly. I am very proud of how far I have come with my knowledge of horse racing. This is a very intricate sport, but it can really take you away. I think that being at a racetrack is such an amazing experience, and I have been lucky enough to be able to see several different racetracks across the nation. Going to the Breeders up in 2019 was an experience I will never forget. The Breeders Cup is the Super Bowl of horse racing, where the world’s best all meet at one track for an amazing day of racing.
We bring such a different angle and a face to this sport. We just don’t talk stats, we do skits, trivia, debates, etc. We try to create a show that will make you laugh.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Hopefully, it will only get bigger. We will be having a young crowd and more women at the tracks having fun and betting horses. I hope that we really show the world what horse racing is about and not the negativity that the media likes to preach. I really hope that we can win the fight with the media and show what really happens at the track. These horses get taken care of better than most animals, and yet the media only focuses on the negative that is driven by nonsense political agendas. There is so much fun to be had in this sport and these amazing equine athletes will take your breath away. The passion of the people within the sport is unbelievable. We have heard some of the most touching stories that you will cherish. This is an exciting sport, just get to a track, take out a dollar, place your bet, and cheer your horse on.
