Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasa Cocke.
Hi Jasa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started collecting stuff when I was a little girl. I inherited my mother’s doll collection and it brought me to her past. I loved the feeling of past/present connection, it is what fueled me and informs who I am today. My parents were archaeologists in the 70’s. We traveled through Europe and the Middle East and lived in Jerusalem for a time. Old relics of the past were our way of life. As a wee girl, my imagination was fierce. I touched and smelled what I could, pretending I was connected to that thing. I am obsessed with the fabrics of culture, adornment, ceramics, paper, and furniture. And now my house and my shop are full of interesting stories. My house and my shop are full of textures, smells, and collections that bring you close to human-ness. It’s fun to get lost in a fragrance that transports you for a moment; look at artwork that causes you to wonder; touch an object that someone used 100 years ago to carry their belongings… I am crazy for it all. It is my real happiness to find merchandise & vintage objects that allow my customers to explore, own, or give. I inherited this unique gift shop from my wonderful and perfect mother. She and I have been slow curating the interior for 15 years. We are just as excited about “stuff” today as we were yesterday…it’s in our (old) souls.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hah! I mean, 2020 was kind of a challenge, right?! I have never worked so hard in all of my life – that was not a smooth road. My close friendships and family, especially my son, got me through that very stressful time…and periodic travels to the High Sierras. I am happy that Small Businesses are back in vogue. Owning a brick-n-mortar gift shop is a labor of love that gets nourished by the love of customers and community. I’ve gotten where I am because of people who do not let go and continue to encourage me with kindness. Plus, my customers are awesome!
We’ve been impressed with MARZgifts, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a small gift shop in South Pasadena that sells great stuff! Home goods, lotions & potions, cards & handmade papers, seasonal whimsy, books, candles, baby gifts, vintage items, and all things curious.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I know this sounds crazy, but my favorite childhood memory was getting bit by an alligator. What a good scar story!
