Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani Woods.
Hi Lani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story is very complex, there are so many parts that led to who I am today. I am a35 year old mother of 2, currently living in Compton CA. I was a little rebellious as a teen, with no real guidance I turned to the streets as a teen, that was until I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, that’s when I decided to straighten up, because she deserved a better life than I had growing up. Moving forward I became an EMT, then at age 23 I had my son. A few years later I went to school to become an ultrasound tech and found my love for working out. I’ve always used running as a way to cope with my depression, but started weight training to build a physique, and consequently got a lot stronger. After leaving a toxic relationship my family used hiking as a bonding tool, it’s free, it keeps you off of your phone, and it’s physical activity without being super strenuous.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve faced it all, homlessness, domestic violence, addiction, you name it. The challenge that has tested me the most is a complex leg injury that I suffered in 2019, I had to be in a cast for 5-6 weeks, and undergo 3 surgeries, and am still not 100%.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I recently started a podcast called Black With Endurance highlighting black athletes in non traditional sports and I am the executive director of a nonprofit called R.O.C_Era dedicated to enriching the lives of inner-city youth.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m competing on season 13 of American Ninja Warrior, so check me out, show some love.
