Check Out Nick Harrison’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Harrison.

Hi Nick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Maryland in a town called Chesapeake Beach. Music has been something that I’ve been infatuated with ever since I can remember. There are those pivotal moments in life that no matter how old we get, we can still relive those times as if they happened yesterday. One of those moments was when I was about seven years old. I received my first microphone for Christmas. I’ll never forget that day and the feeling that I had when I took the microphone out of its box. I didn’t even have anything to plug the microphone into to use it properly (lol), but the feeling I had when I held it in my hand was unlike any other. I started writing poetry and songs around the age of nine. Were they any good? Who knows (lol), but it gave me this sense of purpose. I was never really apart of the “in” crowd throughout my school years. I was outgoing, but an introvert at the same time. I never really felt accepted, so music was my outlet, my escape. I started recording songs when I was around 11-12 years old.

As years passed, what started as an outlet, as a release, turned into something that I couldn’t go a day without thinking about. From then on, I kept writing everyday. I recorded, everyday. Around the age of 19, I connected with a well-respected DJ in my area named DJ Dynomight. He took me under his wing and I would record in his studio a few times a week. He’s still one of my mentors to this day. Around that same time, I started a Youtube Channel called “Verse of the Week” which grew a pretty decent following around my area. At that time, I was doing shows at Baltimore Soundstage and other local venues at least once a month. When I was around 22 years old, I moved to LA for the first time with my team/friends, who were also trying to help me realize the next level of my dream. When I arrived in LA, I continued recording. I performed at venues such as “The Viper Room and “The Roxy,” to name a couple. LA chewed me up and spit me out a few times, but I kept coming back for more. Fast forward six years to 2017. After years of persistence and dedication to my craft, I was able to land an audition for a music competition show called “The Four.” That was the biggest opportunity that I had had to date, an opportunity that I’m forever grateful for. After auditioning, I made it to the live shows where I earned “a seat” as one of “The Four” members.

Working alongside well-respected artists like Meghan Trainor, Diddy, Fergie, and DJ Khaled during filming was an amazing opportunity. It gave me an inside look into a world that I’m so intrigued by. Being on a television show was an amazing experience that opened doors and provided great opportunities.

In 2021, so far, I’ve released 5 new singles. I continue to work endlessly at my craft each and every day. My ultimate goal is to create and share music with the world, in hopes that it helps people get through their day to day. I hope it helps them understand that no matter if you feel like you don’t belong or feel like you aren’t accepted, that it’s quite the opposite. You’re loved. You’re special. Stay focused. Spread love. Spread positivity. Keep creating! #FunkyGold

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say my journey has been anything but smooth! However, I’m extremely grateful for my journey thus far. I feel as though you’ll never fully appreciate the fruits of your labor if there isn’t some sort of adversity thrown your way, so all in all, I’ve embraced it over the years. I feel like being an aspiring artist or musician is one of the most difficult careers to really “succeed” in. More than anything, it takes resilience and an immense amount of self-belief. I will say though, that even facing hurdles of self-doubt to not feeling accepted, I’ve always been able to use that as motivation to push me to the next level every time. As artists, we pour our heart and soul into our work, literally. There’s a sense of vulnerability that we reveal to the world, and at times, that can be a hard thing to do. We’ll all experience struggles and difficult moments on the road to our idea of happiness and success, the only thing that truly matters is how you perceive it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d say that I specialize in making hip hop/rap music. I’m known best for being a lyricist, however I don’t like to put myself inside of any box! I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my desire to be a better human being. I feel like growth and self realization are things that we should work on, daily. We are ever evolving, so you’ll never have it all figured out, but to constantly work on yourself is crucial. I want to use my craft as a way to help others. Music has helped me maneuver my way through some of the darkest times of my life and I want my music to be the reason someone was able to get through theirs.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel the characteristics I’d give most credit to is my vulnerability and transparency within my art. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I want people to understand that being vulnerable and showing emotion is far from a weakness. Being exactly who you are, unapologetically, is an invaluable thing. I feel that that quality can be the catalyst to anyone’s success.
