Community Highlights: Meet Cindy Calderon of Ladies KAR Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Calderon.

Hi Cindy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I own & run Kingdom Auto Repair (KAR) Shop alongside our four beautiful kiddos in Orange County. Recognizing how hard the car industry has become for women, we founded this business committed to integrity, honesty, and transparency. It all began with a simple belief: there is a better way to run an automotive shop. But six years ago I didn’t know anything about cars myself. With my first two babies along for the ride, I set out to learn the basics in car maintenance, learning slowly side-by-side my husband, he is the expert on the field. Over the years, I went from clueless to confident and so as women came into our shop, I passed along the knowledge about what was going on under the hood of their car while my husband worked. In those years, we’ve heard so many stories about women who were overcharged, intimidated, misled or even straight lied to about what their car needs.

So Ladies KAR Care was born. We launched at the end of 2019. We hosted clinics at our shop where we teach women about the car basics and how to learn mechanic language. We had over 100 women every time we did our clinics. Due the Covid-19, we had to stop gathering but that was an opportunity to go online and help more women in this matter. We are creating a community to support each other to gain confidence and grow together… we have a community of over 2500 women now supporting each other. We launch our first product to support women as well. A car maintenance planner.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think the fact that there is not much business helping women in this area, and women don’t know resources like us exist, they can’t find us. It’s been a challenge create brand awareness in this time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an online organization that help women to gain confidence by learning about their cars maintenance. Dealing with car repairs leaves some women feeling lost, confused and frustrated. Many feel like they’ve been taken advantage of because they don’t know much about the inner workings of a car. We believe every women should be able to feel 100% Confident that if you found out you had to take a 1,000- mile trip tomorrow morning, you’d be able to walk out to your car (right now) and go make sure it’s ready for the trip. It’s not so much that you “should” have to – but a least so that you could – if you had to. We are creating resources to help them learn more about their car but most of all empower women to feel confident and capable that she can do anything she set her mind into.

A couple of those sources are: 1. The KAR Girl car maintenance planner The KAR Girl Planner was created by a woman for women. Whether you’re a brand-new 16 years old or have 6-decades of driving under your seat belt, this planner will teach you the basics about your car so you can plan and track vehicle maintenance and become more confident when dealing with mechanics. 2. We have a Free community in Facebook group where they can feel safe to come and ask any question they have about their car maintenance. 3. Blog bull of information about car maintenance basics 4. We are building our YouTube channel with how to videos. 5. we launch our KAR Girl talk show podcast next month where we are going to bring our audience to the microphone to share their stories in the auto industry. 6. Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes, I had a miss understanding of what a mentor was. My advance is to find someone you want to be like find someone that is like you, someone with a similar set of strengths, beliefs, mission you want to follow… Otherwise, you’ll just end up frustrated. Spend some time finding the right person.
