Today, we’d like to introduce you to Lou Courts and Jadeyn Madsen, the pair behind pop duo Valencia.
Lou and Jadeyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
(Jadeyn and Lou) – We first met at Berklee College of Music Summer program in 2015. We both had a strong connection right away that soon grew into a friendship and a long-distance relationship for the year that followed. Come Fall 2016, we were both in our freshman year of college back at the same school.
We continued to play music together, but Valencia was really formed when we played a show together at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London in the summer of 2018. We played a couple of songs that we’d written together and some covers and we had such an amazing reaction from the crowd that it really made us want to continue being a duo. From there, we just kept playing and recording and released our debut single together as Valencia in 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a perfect road and we had some obstacles, whether it be attending college full time and managing the duo, or the pandemic coming right as we were transitioning into a move to LA, and trying to navigate that music scene in the midst of a lockdown and all that goes with it! We always try and make the best out of a difficult situation though. We’ve had some great virtual opportunities like our collaboration with SkinnyDip London on Instagram live and live-streaming with Twitch as well over the last few months!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We are a British-American Pop Duo called Valencia that officially formed in 2018. We are both the vocalists and songwriters for our duo and have collaborated with producers and co-writers for our latest releases. However, we are currently co-producing our latest tracks that we are working on which we are really excited about! We have released three singles so far but have SO much new material ready and we can’t wait to share it all with everyone. We also have a brand new single “No Caller ID” confirmed for release under AWAL on 4th December.
We think our relationship outside of music really helps us flourish creatively and find that we are always on the same page in terms of goals and where we want to be. It’s not always easy starting a business together when you are in a relationship with your business partner but we never forced anything and always had things happen naturally between us from the beginning stages of our friendship to relationship to then becoming partners in a business.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success as being able to live off making our music as our full-time career; People having a connection with the music we make is success for us. It’s less about a one set marker for success, more about creating longevity in the industry by continually growing our fanbase.
