Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley LaRae.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey in Los Angeles as a dancer in the entertainment industry. This is where I built many of my friendships and connections that have created the foundation of which I stand on. After about of year of living in LA, I realized I was drawn to creating stories and visual content. I pursued my career in acting and brought to life many characters through commercials and film. My career began to take off as I landed my first big movie with James Remar and the producer of “The God Father”. I was hooked. From there, I went on to do films with Master P, “I got the Hookup2” and Deon Taylor’s “Fatale” with Hilary Swank. As I continued to gain relationships and a strong understanding of being on a film set, I decided to write, produce, and act in my first short film, “Finding Home”. It won Best Woman Filmmaker at the New York International Film Festival and was later sold to UrbanFlix for distribution. Now I am continuing my career in acting, as well as growing my entertainment company, LR Entertainment, as a producer for music videos, commercials, and film/television.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t feel that anything worth achieving comes easy. I have had more bumps along the road than I can keep track of, and I appreciate the significance that every one of them has had. One of the biggest obstacles that I continue, and will always run into, is perseverance. When I first came to LA, I had this idea that “making it” was only reserved for the moments I walked the red carpet and everyone knew my name, and people wanted to take pictures with me. However, that was the superficial dream that a young girl from a small town knew from the movies. I didn’t know that what was to lie ahead were many bumps, scrapes, and bruises that come along with following a dream. In this time of pursuing my passion, I found purpose. That word “purpose”, and applying it, connected me to my drive and perseverance that helps me to get back up when I am told “no”, “you can’t”, or “that is impossible”. Being a Black and Mexican woman in this industry can always serve as an obstacle when it comes to breaking barriers in this industry, but I find that when you work around people who respect you and your craft, you will go further.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
LR Entertainment is an entertainment company that serves as hub for connecting different pieces of a production and bringing them together to fulfill a client’s vision. They are in association with WENTV, which a distribution company for independent content creators. I specialize in producing. A client will come to my associate, Joel Daley (owner of Creative Vibez Only), and I, to hire us to create their visual content. We are known for bringing an incredible vibe to any set and working closely with any client to bring their vision to life. I am most proud of how well we have built our team. Every person we hire, and every client we have, people always compliment on how well managed the set was and how the staff was very attentive to everyone.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always bubbly friendly and outgoing. If it is any correlation, I was a cheerleader for 11 years of my life. Having a team environment to grow up in made me conscious on working toward goals that were bigger than myself. I always had a strong vision and tenacity when it came to executing my goals. I ran student council marketing and taught workshops to other students on how to grow student engagement. The most ironic piece of it all; I did not get involved in the arts until my last year of high school.
