Meet Heather Nelson of Nothing to Hide Waxing in Valencia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Nelson.

Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I chose beauty school because Esthetics was something I had always been interested in and it was something I felt would help me connect with others in a really meaningful way. Starting my business has been therapeutic in a lot ways. Like so many others that start a small business, I rediscovered big parts of myself on this journey.

I found my intuition, became self-sufficient, and put a new skill in my toolbox at every turn. Including this year, when ‘WAX by Heather Nelson’ became NOTHING TO HIDE. I made the choice to rebrand my business to showcase the sincerity behind my mission. As a small business in the town I grew up in, I feel like it’s a love letter to my community. You’re beautiful; come as you are; you have nothing to hide.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When starting your own business, the majority of finding success is through a battlefield of obstacles, challenges and realizations. I think the biggest challenge I’ve had is fighting for the legitimacy of my business during mandated Covid-19 shutdowns and finding meaning in a slower-paced life without being able to do my job.

During a time where I was dangerously overworking. My mom was always telling me, ‘Heather, sometimes you need to be a human BEING and not a human DOING.’ Balance has never really been my thing. It wasn’t the treacherous vitamin d levels, chronic anxiety or the neglect of every other spoke on my wheel of life that got me to slow down- it was a PANDEMIC.

I was so obsessed with working to the exclusion of everything else that I now realize is actually life. On days where I was enjoying what I had worked hard for, I could hear a gentle Universal whisper saying, ‘duh babe, it’s always been here, you’ve just always been on your way out the door.’ This time has exposed the clarity of my purpose and I can’t wait to get back to work… in a more balanced and appreciative state.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nothing to Hide Waxing story. Tell us more about the business.
Beyond the brow sculpting and the infamous 7 Minute Brazilians waxes. I’ve always had a deep desire to connect with people and “waxing” is just the guise under which I feel I do my REAL work. My real work is always creating a safe, empowering, positive space for women. The goal has always been to create an inclusive space for women to feel inspired by their own beauty; to choose what feels good to THEM. There’s also a huge trust factor! My clients and I see each other frequently. We build long-lasting relationships. I love being able to laugh with them, cheer them on, and celebrate their wins. But also, I appreciate the candid conversation, the sharing we do about real-life frustrations and even trauma. These relationships are something I consider extremely special and I fiercely guard. Together, we are blissfully human. It’s a beautiful thing. My clients have seen the many iterations of me as a woman and me as a professional and I think that’s an important bond between service provider and client.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think the phrase “self-made” is silly. Every mentor, former employer, client, friend and colleague is responsible for my success personally and professionally. Every client interaction for the last 12 years is woven into the thread of my life. I have taken it all seriously, including criticism. There is a power in acknowledging and accepting when you’ve made a mistake: in business, marketing, branding, or even in interaction. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow and to show up in a genuine way. I am the sole proprietor of my business, so it’s all on me. I put a lot of myself into this work and take it seriously. But with that comes my desire to be authentic with my clients and potential clients. My business is only successful if the clients I serve feel revitalized and confident, leaving my space.
