Meet Laura Luna of Mama Luna Cakes in Mar Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Luna.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up baking in the kitchen with my mother using my Grandmother’s cake recipes. As I got older, I explored with different flavors and began baking cakes for close friends. For years, baking was a favorite hobby of mine. When friends, neighbors and co-workers began asking if they could order cakes, my husband encouraged me to start my business.

As a stay at home mom, raising our three boys, I decided to put more time and energy into my cakes. Lately, my business has really taken off and I’m really excited for the future.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business, there are always obstacles that could either make you want to give up or push you to work harder. I know that the tests I faced were there to help me grow as a person and as a business owner. I’ve always known that baking is something I wanted to pursue no matter how long it took me to succeed. I think it’s human nature to have self-doubt which I personally had to overcome. After pushing through the fear, I experienced strong feelings of fulfillment and accomplishment that gave me confirmation that I would be successful.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a small business that specializes in homemade cakes. I am known for my deliciously moist bundt cakes and special Mama Luna buttercream. I work out of my small kitchen at home and have been delivering cakes locally for the past six years. It’s a service I enjoy to give to the community. I am passionate about baking and I put a lot of love and thought into each cake. The signature of my cakes is that they’re not overly sweet which my customers really appreciate. It is really important to me that both adults and kids enjoy Mama Luna Cakes. The joy that my cakes bring to others is the heart & soul that continues to inspire me.

What were you like growing up?
I was born & raised in Los Angeles. I grew up in a house with three brothers and my Godmother (from Mexico), who helped raise me while both my parents worked full-time. She taught me fluent Spanish and many life lessons that I am so grateful for today. My parents worked hard to provide for our family and they always supported my dreams. As a little girl growing up with all brothers, I was pretty independent, easygoing, funny and loved playing sports.
