Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaleon Green. Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Kaleon.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today?
My interest in boxing has been there for as long as I can remember – my first cousin was married to Muhammad Ali’s trainer, Drew Bundini; my aunt dated Muhammad Ali; and my father and Muhammad Ali grew up together in the same neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. As you can see, boxing is in my blood!
Although I was around boxing as a kid, I officially got my start with legendary Hall of Fame boxing coach, Amilcar Brusa, with whom I trained for three (3) years at La Brea Boxing Academy in Los Angeles. I later met another Hall of Fame boxing coach and celebrity trainer to the stars, Terry Claybon, owner of LB4LB Boxing Gym. Terry trained Denzel Washington for his role in the movie, Hurricane, and he trained Jake Gyllenhaal for his role in the movie, Southpaw. I worked as Terry’s assistant for 10 years. I ran Denzel Washington’s youth boxing camp for five (5) years, and I helped Terry run and organize a boxing team of amateur and professional fighters.
I had always dreamed of opening my own gym. I got a huge boost of confidence and an even stronger desire to open my own gym when Terry Claybon told me and others that I am one of the best trainers he knows; so I started to aggressively pursue it a few years ago. I worked tirelessly to make my dream a reality, and on November 9, 2015, Free Spirit Boxing & Fitness opened its doors. I chose that date to honor my mom who passed away from complications of multiple sclerosis (MS). November 9th is her birthday.
Since opening, I have signed up over 200 members, far exceeding the goal I set for myself. Sometimes, I am amazed at what I have accomplished in the last nine (9) months; it’s humbling to say the least, especially since all I ever wanted to do was make my mom proud. I hope she is smiling and pleased that her baby boy is successful and a blessing to others.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life is easy, but I accepted the challenges that came my way and dealt with them accordingly. I have always believed in myself, and I trusted that an opportunity would present itself one day. I bounced around from the boxing gym to several fitness gyms, and trust me when I say it was hard to hold on to the belief that I would one day have my own gym. Through it all, I never stopped believing, and I never stopped grinding. Eventually, God made a way as he always does.
The whole experience humbled me and made me one of the most well rounded trainers in the business. In fact, that’s how I got my name – KGSuperTrainer.
To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything in this world; they shaped me, molded me and made me who I am today.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue to grow and strengthen my brand. For starters, I want to open another Free Spirit Boxing & Fitness gym in the next 4 years and start training fighters again, with the ultimate goal of capturing a World Title. I am also staying open to business opportunities that aren’t yet known. I am dreaming big, bigger than I ever have before. Dreams don’t have deadlines, so I will keep grinding until they are a reality.
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
The most difficult time in my life had to be when I was diagnosed with cancer shortly after graduating from high school. Facing my own mortality was hard; I didn’t know if I was going to live or die.
The other is the death of my mom who passed away from complications of multiple sclerosis one week before my 21st birthday; she’d been battling the disease since I was in 2nd grade.
Despite the difficult road, God carried me through it all. I am undeniably blessed.
