Meet Michael De La Torre of Mic Dangerously in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael De La Torre.

Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career in music, like many, started off with just playing music in lessons and in the school band, first the piano then graduated to trumpet (last chair). But once I picked up the guitar, I knew what I had to do. I spent my 20s going to school and performing in bands and making records, and after my Bachelor’s Degree from CSULB in Interpersonal Communications, I went onto graduating from MI and became a certified audio engineer.

Today I work as a performer in several bands, namely Jelly of the Month Club. JOTMC is a band that specializes in family-friendly music that spans from exciting big band swing to ska/surf stylings of the LA/OC heavyweight co-founders were sure to bring. We’ve published dozens of songs and videos aimed at educating and inspiring kids and adults alike. The band’s focus was to bring families together, and have just come off their fourth run of a nationwide ran show with the world-famous Peanut’s Gang in “Woodstock’s Music Festival”. Founders were members of Sublime, The Ziggens and Zen Robbi. I also work as a producer/engineer making a racket at several states of the art OC/LA studios.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It sure has been a long and windy road, lots of ups and downs. But my dad always said, you can’t keep a good man down, so here I am and here I’ll stay. The struggles were all typical, lots of work for little pay, people trying to get me to sign the dotted line of a deal that didn’t favor me much. I’ve met some of the most amazing people I’ve ever known through music so it was just taking the bad with the good, I guess. Bless them all alike, wherever they are.

Mic Dangerously – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in producing music and video productions. Any genre, any project, if you have the vision and the means, me and my team can make it happen. My passion project is with Jelly of the Month Club, and we are producing more and more family-friendly content. We have a new record in the works full of exciting and inspirational songs, with several music videos coming soon, we are even dabbling in animation.
Stay tuned!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, at the end of the day success means happiness. Am I able to be happy? So every time that I set a goal, I make sure that when I reach it, I make sure that I am happy with my progress, no matter how small, and not just obsessed and ready to only focused on the next move.
