Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Garner.
Casey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve known that I wanted to work in music since I was about ten years old. I would literally google the agencies like CAA and UTA when I was in 8th grade and plan my future, I was determined to be apart of that culture.
I ended up moving to LA about three months after I had finished college and took up a random job for a family business, and then about a year later I ended up landing a job as an assistant for an independent concert promotion agency and I’ve been working for them ever since. I feel like I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants since I’ve taken this job. About three months into me taking my position as an assistant to the CEOs, my co-worker (who was a tour manager) had quit and my boss pulled me into his office and told me to ‘figure it out’ since I was now going to take on all of his responsibilities. I felt like a deer in headlights, I knew nothing about live performances, backlines, riders, NOTHING about live shows. Past that, we were launching six tours that year (comedy, rock, EDM, hip hop, country and pop) and our partners were Monster Energy and Live Nation, I had no clue on how I was going to launch shows that looked up to par for them. I took a ton of L’s the first year learning as I went, but I also took a ton of W’s making it work for someone that knew nothing about the live event space. And honestly, I’m still learning as I go! Especially with the pandemic.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, I mean not only launching myself into an industry I knew nothing about in the beginning, I’m a young black woman in an industry dominated by white men. I constantly get asked if I “know what I’m doing” or if I’m even qualified for my position. It used to bother me but now I go into it headstrong and say, “Yes, I’m your point of contact and if you have an issue, we can discuss it now or later, but let’s just get the show on the road.” Of course, people go around me in instances like that and go straight to my boss when I’m being “defiant” (aka telling them that they can’t disobey the rules) but when I got hired he told me that “we don’t work for idiots” and he’s upheld that and it’s nice to have a boss that has your back in those scenarios.
Monster Energy Outbreak Tour – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Monster Energy Outbreak is the largest national touring brand in the club & theater space and currently consists of six annual music tours. We aim to showcase the biggest new names in music each year amidst their culture-impacting, breakthrough moment. Notable alumni include Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore, The Chainsmokers, Asking Alexandria, Cole Swindell, Carnage, Post Malone, Garfunkel & Oates, Kane Brown, Fetty Wap, 21 Savage, and Mike Shinoda; to name a few.
What sets us apart is that we are a hands-on small team and personally choose artists that we feel are going to break thru in the next year.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is doing whatever makes you happy no matter the dollar amount. It sounds cliche, but I definitely wouldn’t have taken his job if it didn’t feed my soul and make me happy at the end of the day. Not only is music my passion but giving shine to other minority women in the industry. Now that I’m here, I feel like it’s my obligation to make a difference. I think leaving something you love better than you found it is a criteria for success. Wow, that was such a “The Notebook” response, I’m kind of embarrassed. Haha.
