Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Robinson.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Akron, Ohio where I started modeling at 20 years old while also studying at The University of Akron. Once I decided to model full-time and dropped out of college to pursue my dream with dedication. After working freelance for a few years and traveling to New York fashion week and Miami swim week, I decided to try and get signed with a modeling agency for bigger opportunities.
I completed a season of NYFW in 2018 and was signed in LA shortly after that. As I was making my come up in LA as a new model I learned who I was in this profession and with each photoshoot that I did came more clarity towards my end goal. After working on music videos, commercials, short films, print, and fashion shows I learned so many more aspects of the business and became completely immersed in the creative scene. Since then, I’ve been working as a model and actress with my LA agency.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being thousands of miles away from all of my family while working non stop in a city where I knew basically no-one was my biggest struggle and still is to this day. In the beginning, I struggled with finding community as I know many LA transplants do because of how vast the city is. The entertainment and creative industries are both saturated which makes it hard for people to find their circle especially when first starting out.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
More than anything, I’m known for modeling. Representing black women with my presence in an industry that was once not even for us is one of my greatest feats. I take pride in knowing that little girls will be able to look at themselves being from Akron and having hope to pursue their wildest dreams. Becoming a mother in the midst of pursuing my dreams has played a huge role in how I approach my work now and everything is looked at through a much a wider lens.
Not only do I work as a model, I am a wellness advocate, an advocate for mothers, and black people across the diaspora.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Climbing into the tree of my parent’s front yard in the Fall and jumping into big piles of leaves with my siblings for sure!
