Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Amis.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born and raised in small town Texas, I always wanted to do big and out of the ordinary things. I loved tv and movies growing up. The Mask and Mrs. Doubtfire were heavily rotated VHSes and I would reenact the hell out of scenes from E.R.. Obviously, my mom decided to put me in theatre classes. I guess my acting career is mostly her fault? Fast forward to 7 years ago, I graduated from Baylor Univ with my BFA in Theatre and then hopped out west. Been auditioning and working here in LA ever since!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
All the actor woes are pretty accurate. Rejection, hours of work for 1 minute in a room, being put on hold for a job and then not getting it (this happened to me 13 times in a row last year!)
But the struggle against yourself can also be brutal. Feeling like you have so much to say or to become but no opportunity to crack it open. Making art of your own and then scared to put it out in the world. But all of the struggle really does make you a stronger human and a better artist. Hard to believe this at times, so self-deprecation comes in handy. It’s a long game that’s different for everyone, so I focus on enjoying it as much as possible.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your work – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have professional experience in commercials, print, comedy and indie dramas. I’ve done national spots for Old Navy, Ring, Norton, Audible, USAA and Otezla. Yes, that pharm ad with the awesome blue Bronco..
Recently, my partner and I shot a new installment for Otezla in our apartment! Quarantine style, with a live set in our home, playing talent and crew, with production watching via zoom. It was wild and so fun and made me grateful for work in this weird time. Love that we can pivot and always find a way to make it happen.
I love what I do because it’s an adventure every time you book a job (or don’t). And this work is all about understanding people, both in story and on set.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m always dreaming and this season has given me space for ideas and some writing too. If plans were up to me, it would include that last great audition in March turning into a job when we open back up!
I just got back from vacation in the mountains and I’m already planning the next trip. I think that fresh air really relieved some stress and revived some creativity. We’ll see what I can get into next!
