Today we’d like to introduce you to JordanL.
JordanL, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a hiphop artist living in LA by way of Detroit, MI. My artist’s name is JordanL. I’ve been in LA for a little over a year and it has taught me a great deal about music and music business. Coming up I knew that I’d have a future in music I just couldn’t really pinpoint exactly how I would do it; if that makes any sense. Like I played numerous musical instruments through elementary to college and I even praise danced with my aunt and her spiritual dance team in early middle school. The feeling that the music gives me is unmatched and I just needed to find a way to deliver that to the world. I knew I had a way with words but I really started taking it serious in college when I realized that the words I say and the message I give can change people’s lives for the better.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Lol… smooth? Not at all. Is it worth it? Definitely. Growing up on the east side of Detroit really didn’t offer much of a success rate at least for the people around me. It was always that glass ceiling that people didn’t even care was there, almost like they wanted to hit it. It felt like average was the excellent and excellent was the black sheep. Now I’m not saying that everything was bad. I’m just saying I wanted better for me and mine. So every time I would make a move to better my life it was always someone in my ear telling me the move was too much, or that I wasn’t ready, or that I simply couldn’t do it. Early on, I would believe them but I quickly learned that they were just projecting their fears on me. I had to break loose, bump my head, get back up and keep fighting.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am known for my wordplay, showmanship, and the Fedora lol. It’s really my thing. I’m most proud of my resilience and perseverance. Like to be honest, I’ve been counted out more times than some would like to admit but I kept pushing. I created a clothing brand from my music “JordanL Apparel” which focuses on tops with statements that capture the eye and make you think. I am most proud of my latest project “The Great Progression” which is currently available on all streaming and downloading platforms. (Lil plug lol) This project has been in the works for the last 2 1/2 years and I have seen its fair share of ups and downs through this project but I continued to push and we made some magic with this one. What sets me apart is I don’t quit no matter if the fan base is bigger, the money is longer, the catalog is larger I don’t care. I never cared. I always knew that my time was coming and to continue to push like my life depends on it because it does.
What were you like growing up?
Mannn I was always outgoing. A goofball really lol. I liked to play a lot and often times thought I was “cool” but looking back on a few of my high school photos, I’m not sure I’d agree now lol. I was passionate about family and a band geek for sure. In middle and high school, I’d sit around with my homies and watch HBCU college band tapes while eating pizza and drinking faygo pop… Man those were the days lol
