Meet Steve Meier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Meier.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Photography has been a constant in my life. Being raised by a professional photographer, some might say it runs in the family. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Nowadays, everyone here is a photographer. It takes work to stand out, to be different. I push myself to be different by constantly exploring. I explore the city I grew up in, the mountains that surround us, the vast deserts and everything in between. I am inspired by the shadows that change with the sun as it travels across the horizon, by the golden light soon after sunset, and by the quiet tunnels that lie beneath a busy downtown. The constant change of environment is a constant feed to my creativity. This transcribes directly into my work, whether that be studio headshots, conceptual work, or landscape photography. I don’t fit into one category as a photographer and my portfolio reflects that. My goal is to bring ideas and visions to life, whether that be my own or others.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road doesn’t exist. We all have our challenges. Cell phones are taking amazing photos, and they are shareable to Social Media almost immediately. It’s difficult to compete with that. I try to make my work stand out, not just a snapshot from a cell phone, but a thought out process that cannot be captured with a phone.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Steve Meier Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Steve Meier Photography was started in 2014 when I started getting a lot of requests for photo sessions. People loved that my photos told a story that it was a perfect reflection of what they envisioned. I have a diverse range of style, but with a darker twist. I am capable of the sunny, happy, overexposed images we all see, but I’m more known for my unique visions. I am very honored that my work has been showcased in multiple magazines and books. I pride myself in the fact that I do things differently than most. I have a large amount of return clients because of my strong work ethics, creative eye, and I am very respectful of their boundaries.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our industry is always evolving. I think we will have a fairly large loss of quality photographers as 2020 progresses. A lot of professionals today are struggling due to Covid-19. They are having to close shop and find other means to support their families. As Los Angeles recovers from the pandemic, a lot of these photographers will not be able to return, and their space will be filled with cookie-cutter photographers. We are also living in a time of empowerment, and we will have clients who will demand respect from their photographers. You simply cannot exist in this industry, in Los Angeles, and not be open-minded. With time, as we emerge from our current situation, there are going to be a lot of people who will be wanting to express themselves artistically. I’m looking forward to the projects that will come from this.
