Today we’d like to introduce you to Abe Simantob.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Abe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as a home inspector in order to supplement my monthly income. Early on I came to realize that home inspectors refer the more serious issues to engineers and that is who I am. So little by little, I built relationships with home inspectors, realtors, and repeat clients and my business grew to the point that I quit my regular engineering business and went full time in the Geotechnical Consulting. My 35 years of experience as a registered Civil and Geotechnical engineer provides my clients with a wealth of wisdom and knowledge to ensure they do not buy a potential money pit!!
As part of my inspections, I typically evaluate the geologic stability of hillside properties, levelness of structures and the condition of their foundations, and the drainage conditions across properties. Upon completion of the inspection I usually generate a written report of my findings and repair recommendations which usually gets emailed to the client in 2 to 3 days.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The downturn in the economy and real estate market between 2006 to 2011 was definitely a hard time. Many inspectors closed shop but fortunately I had enough work to keep going.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our company is one of the only companies that evaluates not only the geologic aspects of a property but also the condition of the improvements on the land (i.e. the house, any retaining walls, swimming pool, etc.) from a foundation and settlement view point. We also evaluate the drainage conditions across properties.
Unlike some companies that are not to be heard of again, we are proud of the fact that we have been around for the last 22 years and always available to answer old clients.
I would say the quality of our inspections and reports sets us apart from our competitors.
What were you like growing up?
I was a hard-working student and loved what I studied in college which is the field of geotechnical engineering. I was always playing in my sand box and still do when I crawl under houses!! It is so important to love what you do because then you look forward to serving people and success will follow.
