Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Romar.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a professional skateboarder and DJ. Started skateboarding when I was 13 been skateboarding for about 17 years and been pro for about eight years. I DJ for a rapper named Hopsin and I am my own artist and I go by ROMAR or DJ ROMAR.
I’ve been featured in a couple of magazines as Thrasher, TheSkateboardMag, Transworld and had the cover of TheSkateboardMag a few years ago.
I’ve been DJing for 6-7 years and have traveled a lot if the world with skateboarding and DJing.
I also produce music and been doing that for a few years.
I’ve had a lot of skateboarding products with my name in it, Boards, Wheels, Insoles, shoes, trucks, tech decks, clothes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t definitely been tough since I was a kid dealing with drama, trauma, and crazy people.
Racism, fear, doubt, messing up in school. Not having a father around, moving every few years, finding new friends, losing myself, lots of broken bones, trying to understand where I fit in.
The journey has been insane.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m known for my skateboarding tricks and how I do them, and my Afro that I used to have before I got dreadlocks.
Now I’m being known as a DJ and PRO skateboarder which is definitely awesome.
Most proud that I turned pro in my 20’s and got to travel the world all through my 20’s
What sets me apart from others is that I’m really unique.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Having an Afro, and doing some tricks on the skateboard world that no one does, Signature tricks.
