Today we’d like to introduce you to Kidd Waff.
Kidd, before we jump into specific questions about your music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I just graduated with a degree in Philosophy, there are currently 40+ million people unemployed, and I have an obsession with pursuing every idea I’ve jotted down in my notes folder. I live for the future, and I always feel as if the moment is a waste of time. It’s all goodie tho. Ima true valley baby, and this is the place I call home. I hope the story I dream of actually crafting out, not the story I’ve lived this far, will be able to inspire the future valley babies and their own babies. Babies are the reason the world goes ’round.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m truly a person who believes that everything happens for a reason. So, I can’t say it’s been smooth or rough; I can only say that it is what it is. But if I’m not being vague then I feel as if I’ve struggled with things that other people have constantly struggled with: insecurities, depression, loss of hope, epiphany’s that turn to sorrow, loss of confidence, etc. Even as I write this, I’m currently feeling a little down because of the death of Jas Waters. It’s scary to see a successful person with my same skin color go through such pain in their late 30’s.
No matter how big I get in the future, I hope I’m able to be relatable with any person. At the end of the day, we all have one head and we’re all human. We will all go through something similar at least once, and if anything, that should show us that we’re really more connected than we think we are.
We’d love to hear more about your music.
Yes, yes, yes. I am a rapper. I took a vow to never explain to people what makes my music stand out to other rappers, because music is so subjective that ima need you to just listen for yourself. But if you really want to know then all I can say is that it makes my tummy tingle, and my tummy doesn’t tingle for just anyone.
Aside from rapping, I am a co-founder of a production company called “Backhouse Productions”. We specialize in short films, music videos, and screenwriting. When I describe it to people, I tell them that they should imagine A24 being made up of all black people, plus music videos.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far is knowing that every song I release is better than the last. Starting this past March, I’ve challenged myself to release a song a month to see if I really have what it takes to become the next tummy tingling rapper. I’ve been successful so far, and my song released on June 26th has been my best song to date. I’m constantly trying to improve and I can’t wait to see how much more I will progress.
