Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Lennox.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I purchased my first semi-pro camera out of curiosity — a little Canon Rebel XSI with a kit lens.nI took a few photo classes at night at my local community college to learn how to use basic manual functions and the next thing I knew, I was hooked. I started setting up test shoots and devouring all things photography-related. I joined Facebook groups, attended photo meetups, free speaker series and slowly but surely I built up a network of fellow photographers who allowed me to shoot with them and them with me. We shared information and referrals and years later they are still my greatest friends in this industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been the smoothest ride but it has surely been an unforgettable adventure. I think the biggest struggle along the way – and this is probably the case for most artists – is allowing self-doubt to cloud my creativity. It is so easy to measure your art, your life and your opportunities to other people’s. I’m sensitive and I found myself doing that often along the way. Especially with social media! It’s such a gift and a curse sometimes. But I’ve found it super helpful to completely step away and find inspiration elsewhere when I start feeling self-doubt creep in.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
When I started my business I originally wanted to focus on shooting magazine editorials but over the years, my focus shifted. Now, I primarily shoot weddings and couple portraits and some editorial work when I can. Although I’m not solely an editorial photographer, I’ve still become known for my portraiture having a natural, editorial flair. I like that.
I have a bit of a nomad’s heart and it was always my dream for my business to grant me opportunities to travel and it really has done just that. Photography has taken me to different cities all over the country, Mexico and most recently, Iceland. That’s definitely what I’m most proud of as a photographer.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
What’s exciting about being a photographer in Los Angeles is that you can find inspiration just about everywhere. There are more creative communities and artsy neighborhoods than most could imagine. This city is just pulsing with opportunity. That being said, there is also an overabundance of photographers already trying to make a name for themselves so you really have to find a way to stand out, whether it be your editing style or finding a niche market. So for those of you just starting out, I would suggest coming to LA with an open mind, networking as much as possible and making sure you are prepared to HUSTLE.
