Today we’d like to introduce you to Airick G.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m 23 years old and I’m an artist from Los Angeles California. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved to entertain from my parents buying me my first drum set at the age of 9 and learning other instruments like the guitar. And over the years, I just found I had a passion for music as I got older.
In my early life growing up, I had many great memories with my childhood friends, we would call ourself the “Sandlot” kids just because of all the adventures and trouble we would get in sometimes as kids. But with the great memories I had I also had not so great ones for the longest time growing up as a kid I always struggled with my emotions and dealing with depression and seeing my mom in and out of the hospital and I never understood why until I was told my mom was very sick. And that added to why I was always so down and depressed. I never understood the stigma of depression so I was fortunate enough to have therapy throughout my life.
I lived with both parents for most of my life, my mom’s name was Charlotte and my dad’s name is Louie. As I grew up, I slowly started to understand why my mom was in and out of the hospital, before I was even born my mom was diagnosed with a serious autoimmune disease called “Scleroderma” which doctors only gave her ten years to live with this illness but I was grateful enough to have 20 years with my lovely mother.
As I grew up I realize how severe my mom’s illness was and most of the medication she was taking most of her life helped and calm her flare ups but that the illness still progressed over the years but that didn’t stop my mom from always being the life of the party and being the happiest person in the room when you walked in. In 2017 my mom passed away. I was devastated and it changes my whole perspective on life, my mom is my best friend and losing her was the hardest things that ever happened to me. But I always tell people the promise that I made to her. That no matter what happens, I will always make her proud and stay strong for her. I was only 20 when my mom passed.
When I was about 16 years old in high school, I would listen to artist like Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, 2Pac, etc. After graduating high school from Downey high, is where I started to meet the team that I have now from having my manager videographer, producer, engineer and etc. In the early stage of my rap career, I was mostly was putting out remixes and covers. As I started to find my own sound, I started to put out my own original music and put out singles.
When I finally found my sound I created a song titled “All Day” which was my first song to ever hit the radio, and that song changed a lot for me, I wanted to create my very first body of work so I went to work on my EP, but before I released my EP I dropped one more single which was off the EP titled “Window Shoppin’” which was on the radio three weeks in a row and happen to blow up on TikTok when someone made a video covering my song that now has 2.8 Million views and counting. Before dropping my EP I had the opportunity to go to POWER 106 for the very first time which was also a dream come true. Power 106 and my manager had invited me out to a festival and also had the opportunity of meeting artists like G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, A-TRACK and eating dinner with OT Genesis, truly was an incredible night and I will never forget it. I’m grateful to be networking and meeting with some of my inspirations and people I look up to in this music industry like Rexx Life Raj and Saba & even going to these events Its a dream come true. After dropping “Window Shoppin’” I dropped my debut EP last Friday On March 6th 2020, its a 6 track EP and its the best work I have ever created thus far. Took me about six months to create the whole project and it’s finally out. Am I most proud of this project. I titled it “Imbalance” Because of chemical imbalance in the brain due to the depression since I’ve always dealt with that in my life. So it all came full circle, I am proud of this project and grateful to have experienced everything in my life to get me where I am today. And this is only the beginning I have so much in store for the future and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was a struggle, from dealing with depression most of my life and in and out of therapy and Losing my mom to her Illness was the hardest thing I ever had to go through. but it made me how I am today.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a rapper from Los Angeles CA and mostly know for my music, and I’m most proud of my recent project I just dropped titled “Imbalance” this was my very first body of work and my first six track EP. What sets me apart from the rest is the amount of trama I have been through in my life, but yet I still have the will to get up and chase this dream I’ve been cashing for eight years now. I don’t use what I have been through as an excuse but I use it as motivation and to keep the promise I made to my mom to always be strong and to always make proud with whatever I do. Thats what keeps me going and pushing through the boundaries.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moments of my career so far is Having my song on the radio three weeks in a row, Going to Power 106, meeting some of my favorite artist like Rexx Life Raj, Saba, Ty Dolla $ign, and even G Eazy, And something I’m more recently proud of is dropping my debut EP “Imbalance” which is my very first body of work and big project of mine. And as I’m writing this, my song “Window Shoppin” just hit over 30,000 streams on Spotify. Super proud and grateful for that as well.
