Meet B4BYLEXIG1RL

Today we’d like to introduce you to B4BYLEXIG1RL.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m Lexi, I’m 22 and I’m a DJ & Creative based in Los Angeles.

At a young age, I knew I would be involved in music and art. Moving from the Bay Area to Los Angeles for high school was by far one of the greatest things done for my life.

Going to a performing arts high school helped shape almost everything I do now.

I would often make visual art and just post it to my Instagram. One day I was like I’m going to make a community out of it.

So on December 27th, 2017 I launched b4bylexig1rl.net.

b4bylexig1rl.net was confusing for a lot of people at first, I can now say my community is fully tapped in.

My website is meant to be like an online magazine and a portfolio of my work, my upcoming shows & community involvement. I have a section called “Top 8” which is the blog part essentially. Here is where I highlight the things that are interesting to me during that week/month. I highlight other people of the youth that are doing unique things, no matter what field they’re in. There’s currently eight issues. There’s also a “cool shit” which is my display of work.

DJing started to interest me in high school. I had a strong phase of just knowing this was what I was going to do, but never took it too serious. My family bought me all the DJing equipment I needed the summer I turned 17. One of my bestfriends Skyler taught me the basics of it and I practiced here and there but didn’t really take it serious until this last year.

When I decided I wanted to take DJ seriously, I started practicing every single day. My roommate and bestfriend is a DJ too so I asked her if she would practice with me and show me everything I don’t know. From there on, I kept practicing and practicing and eventually had my first show!

I haven’t stopped since I had my first show and don’t plan on it!

Has it been a smooth road?
My road has definitely not been the smoothest.

All of my family wanted me to go to college, be a nurse or do something with my life that they knew would I could live off of. I knew that wasn’t going to be my life path so I had to do my absolute best and still DO have to do my best to shut out the voices telling me that my art isn’t going to work for me and keep on.

From building the website to DJing I’ve definitely struggled but it’s only built me in the end.

One of the bigger struggles with building my website was knowing what my vision was and has been the whole time but trying to build a community out of something that wasn’t very clear to others at the time.

I had to continuously remind myself why I was doing this and what I was doing this for and that the hours I was putting in coding and making visuals would inspire at LEAST one person to do what they love even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else at first.

With DJing, I would say the part I struggled with is just starting. Actually sitting down with myself and making sure that I was going to commit and take it all the way.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
B4BYLEXIG1RL.NET is a community for the youth.

I am most known for making sick visual art, my community involvement and giving the crowd the absolute best experience every time I DJ.

The thing that sets me apart from others is the energy you feel when you hear me play and the experience you feel when engaging with b4bylexig1rl.net.

I’m most proud of staying involved with the youth and my community. It’s one thing to have a blog or to just be a DJ. But it’s a whole different experience when you can truly engage, enrich and include with the people that not only support my vision but have a vision of their own.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Los Angeles. I’ve been here since my teenage years and can truly say I wouldn’t change a thing about it. I wouldn’t change anything but I strongly encourage everyone to go after their dreams. This is the place to do it.
