Meet Andressa Cordeiro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andressa Cordeiro.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I first moved here, I was going to UCLA but was focused on getting as much set experience I could get. One of my friends at UCLA told me that Mole Richardson was looking for interns for their stage. So I started to go there everyday I didn’t have class or a set to go. It was amazing and I learned a lot not only about lights but Hollywood and the industry. That’s where I met Isidore Mankofsky because ASC stored the still frames from its members there and he would prep them for exhibits. Helping him was part of the job. Larry and Izzy saw my reel and told me that I should go to AFI. That’s when I first heard about AFI, actually, it was through them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m very lucky and always got a lot of help. There are a lot of amazing people who were and are generous with their time to show me the way. The same day you reached out to me about this interview, I was getting ready for a shoot and was searching for Vasco Nunes lighting diagram. When I typed his name on my email search, a very sweet recommendation letter from him appeared, back from when I was a graduate student and was applying for an internship at the Academy (of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). It moved me to read it again and see how generous he was because he had just taken me and another fellow college under his wing for a shoot (and that’s that diagram I still use as a starting point to diagram lighting on stage shoots). That always happens to me, there’s always someone, something. I’m glad that you asked about this so I can talk a little bit about Vasco, he is very much missed.

(Vasco died in 2016 at a motorcycle accident at only 41 years old)

Please tell us more about your work.
I am a Director of Photography, so I manage the camera and the Grip and Electric team at a shoot.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hear grandma Regina play acoustic organ or watch The Blue Lagoon with grandpa Vicente.
