Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayumi Recker.
Mayumi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Mogi Mogi Baby was created out of a personal need. I was 40 when I gave birth to my son. I discovered a need for the product when my son was suffering from baby eczema. I visited numerous dermatologists and pediatricians both in Japan and here in the USA. Some recommended steroids. Because I was worried about the side effects of steroids, I started searching for a natural remedy that is gentle and could be used every day.
One of the dermatologists recommended trying an oatmeal bath. I found many oatmeal baths but the majority contain “colloidal oatmeal”. “Colloidal oatmeal” is finely milled oatmeal and disperse evenly in water (in theory). However, I tried three different types of oatmeal baths and they all left a mess which was very difficult to clean. I felt that the oatmeal was working on my son’s skin, but I simply didn’t want to deal with the stress of cleaning the bathtub and the frequent drain clogs.
Our doctors in Japan recommended Yomogi, an herb that has been used for centuries for skin ailments. It worked on treating my son’s skin but was missing some of the benefits of oatmeal. After consulting with many pediatricians, dermatologists, and physicians both here in the United States as well as Japan, I finally found a solution that works: A combination of plant-based ingredients were assembled from 3 regions of the world. This formula came to be the key to the mogi mogi bath pack.
Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest, my original intention was not to start a company but to help as many other mothers as possible. In the beginning, I was mixing bath packs and distributing them to as many other moms who had babies with dry skin. I am part of a mother’s group and I would give away the product to anyone who wanted to try it. Eventually, I was getting requests to start a company. Once people tried it, I was asked for more. Eventually, I had to create a company to keep up with the requests.
BUT if I had to pick a struggle, it would be introducing a new ingredient to the American consumer. Yomogi was always used by my family in Japan for years to treat rashes and other skin disorders. If I had to name some struggles they would be: Getting people to accept an ingredient they have never heard of- yomogi, 2) Learning new ways to reach new customers. Once people try it, they like it. However, it is not always easy reaching new users without spending money on advertising. I personally want to grow organically and with word of mouth by people who have used the product. That way you get real and honest feedback. And trust me, I do listen.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mogi Mogi Baby – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Ingredients make the difference: All of the ingredients used in the Mogi Mogi Bath Pack are USDA certified organic. Yomogi is one more ingredient that sets the product apart from others on the market. For centuries in Asia Yomogi has been used to treat everything from blood circulation to fatigue. Rich in Vitamin E, it is good for hair and skin, giving it a smooth, moist, and shiny appearance. Among its many healing qualities, the plant is a natural holistic treatment that is an effective treatment for eczema.
As a product, the mogi mogi bath pack is unique in 3 ways: 1. There are oatmeal bath soaks in a market but they all leave a hard to clean mess on bathtub. Mogi mogi bath care never leaves mess. 2. It’s the first baby bath treatment that contains yomogi here in the States. Yomogi is the herb widely known in Japan, Korea and China to help irritated skin conditions but not many people in the US know what it is. and 3. Mogi mogi bath care is an easy and safe bath care product for a baby’s dry skin.
I am most proud of the fact that I created a product that helps other mothers like myself. I know what they are going through when they have a child with skin issues. I experienced it and it’s not fun. I am so proud that my product helps others. And I am grateful for my friends and the support I continue to get from friends, family, and customers.
