Today we’d like to introduce you to Bekah Rife.
Bekah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About five years ago, I fell into becoming a private chef. I had a background in cooking as I have always cooked for myself, and part of my allowance growing up was cooking dinner for my family. Over the years, my business began to grow to include diet consulting, recipe development, catering and cooking lessons. Everything I cook is plant-based and revolves around the values of whole food eating.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey has not been linear. Since I fell into becoming a chef, I did not realize it would be my career for quite a few years. I thought it was just something I was doing until I figured out what I really wanted to do. But the more I learned about food, whether in the kitchen or throughout my travels the more I fell in love with it. When I was not cooking, I missed it. I found that cooking was a medium I could pour my entire heart and soul into without holding back anything. It was a way I could fully express my love. When that understanding came to me, I knew I had found a true calling that was not to be dismissed.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in cooking whole food plant-based food. I am known for creating beautiful interactive snack tables and wonderful desserts. I am most proud when the people eating my food are delighted and happy. Many times eaters come up to me and tell me how the food and presentation is ‘so me’. Somehow I understand what they are saying and take it as a great compliment.
Growing up, I always felt so nurtured and loved by my grandmother’s cooking. Many of my clients do not have time to cook or a loved one at home cooking for them. I try to be that support and comfort they can rely on when they taste the food I have prepared for them. It is an honor.
I recently partnered with a gourmet plant-based cheese company called Sri Mu. We are a subscription model, shipping artisanal hand made cheese throughout the US, with plans to grow internationally quite soon. Without any bias, it is quite honestly the best plant-based cheese I have ever tasted. I am really proud of the product and to be involved with this company!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very shy child. The environment I was raised in did not support a lot of self-expression or exploration as to who I was. Because of this, I channeled all my energy into sports; swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo. I excelled becoming a national champion, qualifying to try out for the Olympics, and eventually was offered a scholarship to college for swimming and water polo. Sports gave my life so much meaning and purpose and in many ways saved me. I attribute most of my positive attributes like work ethic, discipline and dedication to my wonderful coaches and what they taught me over the years.
I continue to compete and perform with synchronized swimming. My team just won first place at Masters Nationals over the summer in Tupelo, Mississippi in the 30-39 age group. You may also see me performing in pools around town or in a music video or commercial here and there 😉
