Today we’d like to introduce you to Manon Tamalet.
Manon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been addicted to cinema since my youngest age, nine years old actually. I knew I wanted to do movies. I knew I wanted to make peoples feel. In high school, I began to do videos for some companies and then someone asked me why I don’t go study cinema in New York or Los Angeles ( I’m from Paris, France). I grow up dreaming about Scorsese, Tarantino, Tony Scott and Tony Kayne cinema. My high school cinema teacher taught me a lot about cinema. He pushed me to extend my passion, and to use it to create my own vision of the seventh art.
So during my last year of high school, I’ve been through something very bad, I almost lost everything. So I realized that I was alive and that I could realize my dream! I worked really hard to get my high school graduation, my English diploma and my student loan. My parents were really supportive. So two months after my high school graduation, at 18 years old I moved 5,642 miles from my hometown Paris to Los Angeles, alone. I got accepted at The Los Angeles Film School in the film production program. Today I’m directing different projects, and I try to talk about Domestic Violences through my art because this subject is really important to me and sensitive.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very very long road, I consider myself as a survivor, so to realize my dream I had to work very hard. I took night classes three times a week to get my IELTS. I got my high school graduation with honor. I was suffering a Depression and a post-traumatic stress disorder due to violences I have been through. But this is the best thing I did in my life, moving to Los Angeles changed my life.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I want to be a director, I directed some short movies and a documentary about skydiving. Today I’m writing a short movie about domestic violence and a feature film about the battle of Mogadishu in 1993.
I’ll graduate in May and I will start to work in a company in June hopefully.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important quality to my success is Patience and determination. That’s the key. “no pain, no gain”
