Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Hansen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dylan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Yo, what’s goin’ on, I am a musician from Southern California. I grew up in a town called Santa Clarita which is about 47 minutes from Los Angeles, or more like three hours if you factor in the fuckin LA traffic. As an only child, I had a lot of time to myself, which I usually spent drawing, watching cartoons or playing video games. I’ve always held on to that wild imagination, creativity, and idea that anything is possible. When I was about 12 years old my friend introduced me to a hip-hop artist I had never heard before, Mac Miller. It was the first time I had ever felt a serious connection with an artist without even personally knowing them. Something about his music and message sparked my passion for creating music as well.
I’ve always considered myself creative and try to channel it through my music as best I can. Everybody has a lot on their mind and it isn’t always easy to express your feelings so I try to let people know they’re not on their own. At the age of 15, with the money I received from my grandpa for Christmas, I purchased everything I needed for a beginner’s home recording studio and got to work. I wanted to get my music out there so I started posting my music on websites like Soundcloud and DatPiff and started to build up more and more plays. Sooner than I ever expected, people from all around the world started reaching out to me about my music and how it has affected them. Today I have over 3.5 million streams on my SoundCloud and plan on releasing a lot more new stuff this coming year.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I feel like with anything that you’re passionate about you are always going to run into obstacles since you are always trying to perfect your craft. It could be anything from yourself to the people around you. You just have to be willing to take a chance on what you love and give it your all to achieve your dreams.
Holding yourself accountable and wanting to be somebody great can sometimes have you feeling depressed. Especially when you’re not becoming the person you depict and want yourself to be. You have to stay mentally strong and understand that if you believe in yourself and try as hard as you can, you can overcome anything.
Things can happen, for example like a heartbreak. Life hits you and sometimes feels like you can’t go on. I was in a dark place for a long time and couldn’t get out. Even though a lot of good emotional music came out of that experience and I’m glad I went through it, but it also left me feeling very demotivated. But in the end, it has made me into a stronger human being. I had to grow as a person and really find myself and love myself to overcome my heartbreak.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My company is myself, but I’m mostly a musician. I currently write and produce all of my music out of my bedroom. I am completely self-taught and can also handle engineering my music as well. I would say that the people that listen to my music say it is lyrical, creative and positive. I hope at least haha. Also, weed…a lot of weed. I’ve always been very proud of each song I create, but also strive to do something better and more creative with the next one.
I’ve made an impact on a lot of people’s lives which I’m also very proud of not only as an artist but as a human being. It was never about money or fame when I started creating. It was and still is, pure passion and love for the music. I truly just want to help people. I guess just that alone sets me apart from most musicians nowadays. I’m very different from many hip hop artists and I’m happy about that. I really focus on my lyrics and the picture that I’m trying to paint in your head. I’m me and nobody else, and that’s beautiful. Be you.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have done anything differently. I am very proud of where I am and who I am today. Every failure has just been a lesson that I’ve used to move forward and become a better me. I’ve learned that things don’t just come to those who want them, you have to get out and grab that shit. I have also realized that things are always changing, evolving around us. For good and bad. Nothing stays the same or lasts forever, so you have to be ready for the least and unexpected at any time. Oh yeah, and going outside it key, literally just go outside and breath.
