Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmadre.
Desmadre, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Our band first started originally with Vic (drummer) and Taty (guitarist) asking each other when will they get together and jam. A week after (which was December last year), they booked a studio and started learning how to play covers. Taty had experience playing guitar, while Vic was learning how to play drums. From playing covers, we aspired to make our own songs. By Mother’s Day 2019, Taty invited Pat to jump in and learn bass. She quickly learned the material we were working on and the rest is history. We managed to play five shows since then, including our first time at a dive bar in Los Feliz.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Art, at least through our perspective can be defined through different spectrums. Vick, for instance, draws, writes lyrics, is into fashion and aspires to have her own fashion line someday. Pat is not only a hardworking mom but also draws and paints. Her father knows how to play multiple instruments and that’s how she has been inspired to play music. Taty has found her place in music at an early age through church. Her first time playing in front of an audience was at a church. She has also found passion in archeology, has studied and graduated from that profession. Currently, she traveled to Europe to pursue a more hands-on experience through this art.
Although there is a difference amongst age, lifestyles, genres in music, we feel that we embody a whole generation through music. Real-life experiences inspire our lyrics and so, real-life problems whether personal, cultural and social are the message we try to portray. It’s all raw and real to the core. Also, we have way too much fun through the process. We all have busy schedules, yet we manage to prioritize time and money to practice at least once a week.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
In our opinion, artists today are privileged to have access to technology for easier exposure. However, the real challenge is keeping the audience engaged in your craft.
As far as life being easier or challenging for artists, it is a double-edged sword question because when it comes to being an underground artist a big part of it is promoting and exposing your art and craft but it can only be sustained for so long if you put in the work and dedication. The best way to encourage and help art and artists thrive in Los Angeles is to stand out and take a chance. Being not afraid to fail but to learn from those failures and continue, having faith in your work and that it matters to each other and to support your local artists. Which reminds me, thank you to the Night Owl Collective for keeping us in mind through their own process.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Our work at the moment can be seen through Instagram @desmadre_la_. Hopefully, we can record professionally soon, however, people can support us by coming to one of our shows.
