Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor McNamara.
Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been drumming since I was two years old and developed a lot of my style and technique from playing in my school jazz band that I joined when I was in 6th grade. I’ve also taken lessons with experienced drummers such as Mike Mitchell, Richie Martinez, and Joel Taylor.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road in fact I’m just now at the point where I’ve sort of found my style and the sound I’m going for. It took about 16 years of drumming for me to find it. I also think committing to a career in the arts can be one of the hardest things a person can do because of the uncertainty of it.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Right now, I play drums for Foliage and Court Verano and will also record/play live for anything Grapefruit Music Group does. I think I’m known for my use of polyrhythms and complex grooves. My most proud moment was probably going on a west coast tour with Foliage and closing the tour at The Echo in LA. I think what sets me apart is my understanding of how and where to apply rhythms and overall feel I play with.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
That’s crazy to think about being that I’ll be 24 but by then, hopefully I’ll have progressed a lot in my drumming and have established Grapefruit Music Group as a more notable record company. Ultimately I seek creative freedom where I don’t have to stress about money or a day job or school.
